What does shoulder pain look like?

Shoulder joints are a common source of irritation and subsequent pain. But what does the pain look like?

Obviously we can't really see pain, but we can see changes to tissues within the shoulder joint that will generate a pain experience.

The pictures below show images taken with an ultrasound scanner and one picture highlights an enlarged bursa (white arrow).
The other picture shows an inflamed Acromioclavicular joint (ACJ).
These irritated tissues, once identified can be injected with a corticosteroid.
By correcting the inflammatory response the experience of pain can be successfully managed.

All too common problem
The error of chasing pain !
For over two years this person visited her GP with knee pain. Injections and physiotherapy did not improve the symptoms or the persons mobility.
The x-ray below shows the painful knee joint. There are no major changes, but because the experience of the pain remained around the knee, so did this persons treatment.
By staying focused on examining how joints and tissues are performing and not chasing the pain we were able to make an immediate diagnosis and confirm with x-ray the true pathology. The bottom picture shows a significant degenerative hip joint.

Remember: Don't chase pain!
