Thrive - Physiotherapy for Women Helping women struggling with pain or incontinence to move, lift, run or jump leak and pain free

20/05/2025

🚽✨ That sudden “I NEED A WEE RIGHT NOW” feeling the moment you see the toilet?

Yep, it’s a thing and it happens to so many women: You’re just walking through your home and happen to catch a glimpse of your toilet… and suddenly, it’s a mad dash to the loo.

This is often what we call urge incontinence or “key-in-the-door syndrome” and it’s all to do with how your bladder and brain have gotten a little too good at jumping the gun.

Over time, your brain has learned to associate the sight of your bathroom or the sound of running water with “it’s go time,” even if your bladder isn’t quite full yet. It's a bad habit. BUT, just like any habit, you can unlearn it too 💪

This is something I work on with women all the time — you’re not alone, and it’s absolutely possible to change the story. 💛

If you’re ready to feel more confident (and stop racing the loo!), I’d love to help.

🚪💦 The Key-in-the-Door Leak – what’s that all about?!

You’re walking home. You’ve held it together. Not a dribble in sight.
But the second you put your key in the door?
BAM 💥 Your bladder suddenly thinks it’s now or never!

Sound familiar? You’re not alone, and it certainly isn't somethign to just put up with!
This very common (and very annoying) phenomenon even has a name: latchkey incontinence.

🧠 It’s a brain-bladder connection issue.
When your brain sees the front door, it recognises safety and a toilet nearby — and it jumps the gun, telling your bladder, “LET’S GO!”
Meanwhile, your pelvic floor is caught off guard.

👉🏽 What can help?

✨ Stop and stand still – literally freeze. Wiggle your toes or press your hands together to distract your nervous system.
✨ Breath first, squeeze second – take a calming breath in, then gently lift your pelvic floor before walking to the door.
✨ Try “JIC wees” less – constantly weeing just in case can teach your bladder to panic early. Let it get used to holding more again.

💬 Been there? Still there? You’re not alone, and it can get better.
Drop a 💦 in the comments if your bladder has ever betrayed you at the front door, or DM me if you'd like to work on it together.

Exciting news from Thrive HQ! ✨

Our lovely little clinic on Sharrow Vale Road is now open four days a week — a big step that reflects just how much Thrive has grown over the past 18 months. I’m so grateful to everyone who’s been part of that journey. 💛

Tucked between the Greedy Greek and the butchers, the clinic has become a calm, welcoming space where women can feel truly heard, supported, and safe to explore their health without shame or judgement.

One of the things I love most about this work is helping women reconnect with their bodies — sometimes for the first time in years. Whether someone is coming in with pelvic floor concerns, needing support during pregnancy, or just wanting to feel more like themselves again, it’s an honour to walk alongside them.

Thrive is about more than just physio — it’s about empowerment, knowledge, confidence… and often a good chat with a cuppa. ☕✨

If you’re curious about what we do, or know someone who might benefit, feel free to message me or pop by for a chat.

🚽 Exercise Tip of the Month: Keep Things Moving and Save Your Pelvic Floor! 🌟

Constipation—we’ve all been there. It affects up to 1 in 3 women, and it’s not just uncomfortable; it can actually mess with your pelvic floor, putting extra strain on it and making leaks worse. But don’t worry, we’ve got you (and your pelvic floor) covered! 🙌

💡 Tip 1: Stool for the Win (Not That Kind!)
Pop a small stool (or stack some books) under your feet while on the loo. Elevating your knees above your hips mimics a squat, helping your pelvic floor relax and making everything flow like it’s meant to. 🚀

💡 Tip 2: Moo to Poo
Yes, you read that right! Instead of straining or holding your breath, try a gentle “moo” sound. It relaxes your pelvic floor, smooths out the process, and saves you from unnecessary effort. 🐄

💡 Tip 3: Don’t Be a Loo Lounger
If nothing happens after 5-10 minutes, get up and move! A quick walk can wake up your gut and give your body the nudge it needs. You’ll feel that “call to stool” again soon enough. 🚶‍♀️

Managing constipation isn’t just about comfort—it’s a pelvic floor saver too. So, what’s your go-to trick for keeping things moving? Share your tips in the comments below—we might even borrow them! 💬👇

💪 Ready to start your fitness journey in the New Year? 💪

Starting a new fitness routine can feel exciting but also a bit daunting—especially if you're worried about aches, pains, or leaks when you exercise. But don’t worry, you're not alone!

Here are a few tips to help you ease into your fitness routine safely:

1️⃣ Start Slow – Take it easy at first. Gentle activities like walking or yoga are perfect for easing your muscles into movement. 2️⃣ Warm Up & Cool Down – A proper warm-up and cool-down help prevent injuries and reduce muscle stiffness. 3️⃣ Focus on Core Strength & Pelvic Floor – Strengthening your core and pelvic muscles is key to reducing pain and leaks when you exercise. 4️⃣ Invest in a Well-Fitted Sports Bra – Ensure proper support during your workouts to avoid discomfort and potential injury.

Remember, it’s all about listening to your body and building strength gradually. Need personalised guidance to get started safely? A Body MOT at Thrive could help you understand your body better before diving into your fitness routine.
