😱‘But I have a really low pain threshold’
This is something I hear all the time and there’s something I’d like you to know…
It doesn’t matter!
And for me to say this as a person who needs an epidural/ambulance/both for a stubbed toe it’s quite a big deal.
You don’t need a high pain threshold to give birth, what you do need is…
🤰🏼To have coping techniques which you have chosen and practised beforehand so that you know what to do when contractions happen
🤰🏼Knowledge of all your options (there are LOADS) so that you can make an informed choice no matter what path your birthing takes
🤰🏼A good support person.
Also – if you want medical pain relief – go for it! If you don’t – that’s fine too! You do you.

And happy giving birth day to my Nan!
My teeny tiny Nan gave birth to 10 babies (my mum is no 9) all at home.
I remember speaking to her about it as a child myself, she was SO blasé about the whole thing as if giving birth is no big deal. It never crossed her mind that anything may go wrong. Confident that she could do it, she did. I often wonder why we don't have the same confidence these days, what can we do to get it back?
A good start is trying to remind ourselves that generally speaking birth is not an emergency! Yes it may become one (just like crossing the road can) but generally speaking it isn't and if an emergency does arise we have fabulous caregivers to help out!

Today always makes me think about one of the most talked about home births there was. I imagine a quiet, dark and small environment might have actually been quite a lovely place to meet your baby, there is probably a lot we can learn from such an environment in todays times of busy, noisy birth places.
