Our Big Purple Bus was at Meadowhall today, did you see us? 🚍

We joined with Melanoma Focus to share vital information and advice this Melanoma Awareness Month.

Early detection of melanoma is essential. If you notice a new mole or lesion on your body or a change in an existing mole or lesion, contact your GP.

Protect your skin. Check your skin. 💜

A big thank you to Eau Thermale Avène & La Roche-Posay for providing suncream samples to members of the public. ☀️ Shout-out to Meadowhall for hosting us and kindly providing gift vouchers for our goody bags 🤩

This week marks Dying Matters Week and this year’s theme is ‘Let’s Talk about Death’.

Talking about death and loss can sometimes feel impossible. But these conversations can help us to make informed decisions, get the right support, and feel less alone.

Whether you’re going through treatment yourself or navigating the loss of a loved one, we’re here for you – every step of the way. 💜

You can speak to our frontline support team from Monday to Friday, 9 am–5 pm at our Cancer Support Centre in Sheffield or on 0114 553 3330 (choose option 1).

If you’re based further afield, you can also get support and advice on board our Big Purple Bus service. 🚐

For more information on how we can help, head to westonpark.org.uk/managing-emotionally.

You’ve helped us to raise £1.6 million for the ‘see it. treat it.’ appeal – in just one year!

We’ve still got £250k left to raise before we can bring a revolutionary MRI Simulator to Weston Park! Could you help us get to the finish line? 💜

Thank you so much to all of the incredible fundraisers who have supported the appeal so far, including:
• Our mighty Mount Kilimanjaro hikers, who raised over £140k (£115k for the appeal) by taking on the adventure of a lifetime!
• Carlton Palmer and friends for raising over £6,000 by running the Sheffield 10k.
• The Sole Sisters, for hosting dinners and charity walks which raised more than £22k!
• Rotary Club of Stainborough, for donating £2k through a collection in Barnsley Town Centre.
• Appeal Board member Hannah Duraid, who raised over £3,500 by hosting Changemakers networking events.
• Khatija Motara, Deputy Operations Director at Weston Park Cancer Centre, who laced up her trainers and ran the Yorkshire marathon.
• PSR Turnkey Solutions, which has so far raised £465!
• The Sheffield Bach Choir, for collected donations at their December concert totalling £1,295.
• The Weston Park Radiotherapy team, who collectively covered 12,500 miles in their Pole-to-Pole challenge.
• Karen Ashurst who completed a mile a day in March, raising £642.

⛰️ With places now open for our 2027 Mount Kilimanjaro trek, we spoke to trustee David Grey MBE about his experience of hiking Africa’s tallest mountain!

“I can honestly say that climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the best and hardest things I’ve ever done in my life.

“I’m extremely proud that I did it, and I got so much out of it personally. To anyone considering signing up, I’d say go for it!”

As well as raising an incredible £140k for our ‘see it. treat it.’ appeal, David and his group made memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. 💜

- Radiotherapy support cushions 💜

This prostate cancer awareness month, we'd like to share that we are funding support cushions for patients at Weston Park Cancer Centre.

These bespoke cushions aid comfort for patients who are suffering with perineal pain and discomfort as a result of their cancer and/or treatment.

Information & Support Radiographer at Weston Park, Lorraine Fulman, who applied for the grant, said:
“We are very grateful for the grant enabling the Radiotherapy Department to purchase six cushions. The cushions have a central channel that relieves pressure and has adjustable inflation on each side to suit individual needs. The design ensures maximum comfort for use on a chair, wheelchair or bed."

We’re honoured to help share something very special. 💜

A book of Sheffield poetry by Tom Gray, a former patient at Weston Park, has been created and released by his family following his passing last March.

Tom’s poems draw upon his experiences of Sheffield throughout his life. In a truly meaningful tribute, all proceeds from the book are being donated to help fund the work we do.

By purchasing a copy, you’ll honour and celebrate Tom's story. Thank you to Tom’s family and friends for supporting us through his beautiful poems.

We’re proud to provide funding for incredible members of staff like Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) research nurse – Helen Trower.

Helen is an advocate for TYA research at the hospital. She ensures young patients know which trials are open to them and supports those who would like to take part.

These trials can help young patients to access the latest treatments, and they inform new approaches so we can improve outcomes in the future.

Thanks to Helen, we’ve seen a five-fold increase in TYA research participation over two and a half years Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. 💜

Helen said: “Teenagers and young adults are a unique and varied group, and I have always felt very lucky and privileged to work with them.

“I am delighted to be an advocate for them and to see an increase in the opportunities for their involvement in research.”

Five years ago, we set out to help patients at Weston Park and other Sheffield hospitals get to their appointments more easily. 💜

Since then, we’ve come incredibly far - and it’s all thanks to our amazing volunteers who make our free transport service possible.

Together...
• We've allocated 21,347 seats to patients going for cancer treatment
• We've driven over 61,436 miles to Sheffield hospitals from our pick up points
• Our drivers have volunteered over 18,744 hours

We’re so proud of what we’ve achieved so far. Happy 5th Birthday to our transport service! 🚐🥳
