Welcome to the world little boy! :)

What a privilege to support a mum and dad overnight as they welcomed their new baby today.

Enjoyed some quiet knitting between the contractions, who knew it would be such a soothing and relaxing thing for a labouring mother to watch!

Great to be at the Nest yesterday and meeting so many lovely mums and babies.

Breastfeeding support is not just for when you have a newborn. We chatted about going back to work, stopping, increasing supply and night feeds.

Got any questions, fancy company? Pop along next week :)

In labour, it can often feel like contractions come and go like waves. As I watched my girls play, I saw one of them embrace the sensation and another run away in fear.

The other used to run away too. But now she's learnt what waves are, knows the feeling and the sound, she's no longer afraid.

As we prepare for and go through labour, it can be so helpful to understand what contractions are doing and how they help your baby come to meet you. Your body knows exactly what it's doing - no fear.

See you tomorrow! :)

Fancy popping along this Monday? I'll be there with Lottie the Doula ready for a chat and a cuppa! :)

The Nest, a group for anyone who is coming towards the end of pregnancy, & parents and carers of babies. This is a free group and everyone is welcome.

Come and join us to meet others walking a similar journey to you. Share the ups and downs of postnatal life, and beyond….
We laugh a lot and chat honestly about what we’ve found helpful so far, and what the challenges are, over a cuppa.
The weeks before your baby is born can seem overwhelming at times; so many ‘to do’ lists, and thoughts of how the next few weeks may pan out. The early weeks and months following baby’s arrival are very exciting, but once the visitors have stopped popping in (or even before they haven’t) you may want to take some time out for yourself every week, and feel supported by a small group of people who really ‘get-it!’

Come to The Nest and be supported, heard, held and rested.

TW: Babyloss

This year Babyloss Awareness Week is 9-15th October.
It is an honour to be involved in the organising of this service of Remembrance for Babyloss, at Whirlow Spirituality Centre, half way through a week of remembrance and awareness.
The short service will be a comfortable place for people of all faiths, and no faith, and will be a safe place for all to feel included and accepted. The service is for anyone affected by baby loss- recent or historical. You may have already grieved or said “Goodbye” to your baby but in recent times feel you want to re visit the grief or memories.
Maybe you supported family or friends through baby loss, or perhaps your loss is following your fertility treatment journey. For some, the loss is that they have not had their own children; for others it may be a loss after a difficult season in their life. There really is no label on ‘baby loss’ at this service.
Many of us have been affected by baby loss, directly or indirectly. If you’d like more information about the service, or would like any further support, please do get in touch.

Whirlow spirituality centre is wheelchair accessible.

Have you been induced? Or are you thinking about it?

Two of my babies were induced. I can definitely tick some of these boxes..

Want to chat more? 😊

How many of these have you heard?

These induction myths are plain wrong.

Some are tactics used to scare women into accepting intervention, or to persuade women that induction interventions aren’t something they need to think too much about.

But the reality is that decisions about induction are worthy of thought.

Because starting labour artificially can be beneficial for some women/babies, in some situations.

There are times when it is absolutely the right thing for women/families.

But that’s not always the case.

Induction of labour also has risks and downsides.

It has repercussions that can last a lifetime.

None of the myths in my pic are backed up by evidence, but they are often heard.

So it’s worth spending some time finding out about the issues, learning about the evidence and then making an informed decision about whether induction and the interventions and restrictions that this involves are right for you.

If you’d like to get started on that, I have a whole hub of induction information and two books that can help you get informed.

You’ll find those at www.sarawickham.com/iol and www.sarawickham.com/time

With thanks to for letting me adapt her idea 💜

Yes, you can share/repost as long as you keep the original pic, text and credit intact.

MATHS TIME

Research shows
the average breastfed baby takes approx
750ml milk in 24 hours between 1-6 mths

Research shows
the average breastfed baby feeds 11 times in 24 hours (can be more than this of course)

750 ÷ 11 = 68.18ml per feed

Then remember many babies have both breasts per feed, so perhaps 40-50ml from the first
20-30 from the second

It's time to normalise small volume feeds more frequently. This is how human babies are supposed to feed.

Some babies may feed less frequently naturally, but may take more milk in one feed if mum has a larger storage capacity. Some may feed more frequently. Many love to cluster feed. 3-4 hourly feeds is not something to aim for. But babies often have one or two longer stretches of sleep in 24 hrs (make sure you are also asleep at these times!). But they will likely feed more frequently at other times of day.

Not all feeds are the same volume. They may want a drink, a meal or an all you can eat buffet!

And it's also time to normalise pumping volumes! 60ml/2oz is totally normal. And if you've breastfed first, it is likely to be less!
