With one of the driest summers on record and the warmer weather set to make a return, Sheffield is low on water reserves.
One thing that could make a huge impact is dry brushing.
We advocate a dry brushing technique so the fluoride in our toothpaste is not diluted.
No need to wet the brush before hand, our saliva will help foam the toothpaste, and never rinse after brushing, this washes the protective fluoride away!

Help save our water reserves this summer

Gum disease is caused by a build up of bacteria in plaque irritating the gums, it is important to brush all the tooth surface and gum line twice daily. You can remove plaque easily with a toothbrush whilst it is still soft, if plaque is missed when brushing it can set to the teeth making removal more difficult and the gums more irritated and even bleed

Mental Health Awareness Week
Mental illness and oral health, Research has shown that those suffering from mental illnesses tend to avoid dental care so much that their oral hygiene is neglected. This can result in gum disease and tooth decay.

There are over 100 schools in Sheffield enrolled on the supervised toothbrushing programme, that's over 10000 children reducing their risk to dental decay.
This school in Barnsley have made a fantastic video showing how minimal the impact is on the school lessons and staff in the day.

Bottle caries occurs when drinks are not swallowed and pool in the mouth, for example when a child falls asleep drinking from a bottle, the sugars stay in the mouth where the bacteria and sugars make acid which causes tooth decay

For parents or carers feeding babies by bottle:
• only breastmilk, infant formula or cooled boiled water should be given in a bottle
• babies should be introduced to drinking from a free-flow cup from the age of 6 months
• feeding from a bottle should be discouraged from the age of 1 year

Since 2014 targeted schools throughout Sheffield have been taking part in supervised toothbrushing clubs aiming to reduce the rate of decay in children. Over the last 20 years this have grown to cover over 100 schools so over 10000 children are brushing.
The toothbrushing clubs are in addition to brushing twice daily at home, but ensure children adapt their fine motor skills and dexterity to complete an effective brushing technique in a familiar environment.

Indeed, some patients with an undiagnosed skin malignancy may only see their GDP on a regular basis rather than their general medical practitioner (GMP). GDPs shoul...

Community & Special Care Dentistry

Community & Special Care Dentistry is the main provider of special care dentistry in Sheffield, and also a significant provider of paediatric dentistry. The service provides dental care in community settings for patients who have difficulty getting treatment in their "high street" dental practice. Patients are referred in to our service by a health care professional.

We look after people with severe learning and/or physical disabilities or who have a profound mental illness and patients who are elderly or housebound or have a medical condition which compromises dental care provision. We also undertake dental treatment for homeless patients at the Cathedral. We also host the city’s Oral Health Promotion Team who are involved in epidemiological work regarding oral health. Adults and children who have a dental phobia and who need a special introduction to dentistry to prepare them for treatment by a family dentist may access the service if they are referred by a health or social care worker. In addition to patient care our service is a major provider of education at both basic and postgraduate level, working alongside the University of Sheffield, the Postgraduate Dental Deanery http://www.postgraddentalsyem.co.uk/ and the School of Dental Nursing. We deliver outreach clinical teaching of undergraduate dental students and dental care professionals, dental postgraduate training posts at foundation, core trainee and specialist registrar level, and trainee dental nurse posts. For the majority of patients requiring the specialised care provided, the service is their ‘regular primary care dentist’ and they remain with the service long term rather than being discharged to another provider at the end of an episode of care. However, for some patients, they will be seen for a shorter period of time, and then referred back to their General Dental Practice. Community & Special Care Dentistry works in conjunction with Charles Clifford Dental Hospital as we are both part of the same Trust. We work under different rules as we offer the Primary Care Service and they offer the Secondary Care, however both services work together in a complementary format.
