Our Peer Support group treated themselves to a Christmas night out this week. It’s so lovely to see all those smiling faces of women who have all got each others’ backs. Some members have been coming for 20 years!

These women lift each other up every week - living with long term mental illness can be the most isolating thing a person can experience and our group really is a lifeline to those who struggle every day.

They have something to look forward to each week, people to talk to who understand, the space to cry if they need it and also the space to have a good old laugh. It’s their safe space and seeing those smiling faces makes my heart melt.

So many problems have been discussed, so much trauma worked through and bravely shared, so many bad days brought into the room and made a little better. I’m so proud of the whole group - they battle on and survive as we all do at Sodit - I feel lucky to know them all! ❤️

We’ve been having a lovely couple of days at Sodit wrapping up for the year. Creative activities yesterday and discussions around Christmas and what a difficult time it can be for some of us. I am so proud of all the women as I watch them lift each other up, give strength, ideas and hope. I feel so privileged to get to teach them and work with them every week. The room is just full of kindnes. 💖

And then today - CHEESE! I need say no more. Very happy ladies!!!❤️ 🧀

Here’s Alfie who came to visit our peer support group yesterday. He was a big hit with everybody & was a very good boy for his mummy who is a member of the group (although I can definitely see a cheeky streak!).

He is a very handsome boy indeed and thought I’d share in case anybody needed a doggy smile this morning! ❤️

Quick fact: stroking animals releases Oxytocin in our brain, which is our feel good hormone - so we defo need more doggies in all mental health groups!!

I’m loving having our medical students Jess and Eden on placement with us as not only are they learning about different approaches to mental health care, they get to do lovely stuff that often there isn’t time for at medical school. Just look how creative they have been decorating plant pots for our office greenery!

They are working hard on an exciting project for us all about the power of peer support - here’s a few snippets from the board of one of our discussion sessions, I bet many can relate!

We like to make things as comfortable as possible for people who attend anything we do and drawing helps one of our group participants - so of course we say ‘just sit, draw away and contribute if you feel up to it’. I feel so proud when people push through that anxiety barrier and find a way to take part in something out of their comfort zone. 💖💖

We’ll be publishing our booklet soon with all our findings about how awesome peer support is, and how helpful people find it being taught by someone like me with lived experience of long term complex mental illness. Watch this space! 😃

(And of course I will obviously be providing Jess and Eden with more plant pots to enjoy being creative with before they go back to doing doctorey stuff!) Learning about the healing power of creativity is definitely one of the best lessons ever! 🫟🎨

We had a lovely session in our Natural Connections group today making wreaths from (mainly) foraged items. I got so wrapped up in what people were doing I forgot to take pics of all the finished projects - but they were amazing!
A lovely couple of hours away from our mental health stuff that’s gets a lot harder this time of year for many of our women. You can see some great stuff being developed in the pictures, lots of creativity, fun, laughter - and of course nature. A perfect morning! 💖

We have been busy Santa’s Elves in the Sodit office today making up Christmas gift bags for all the Women we support.

Thank you so much to all the customers of Dunelm Kilner Way who have kindly donated gifts so everybody who uses our service can have something to unwrap on Christmas Day.

We are so overwhelmed by the kindness & generosity of everybody who has gifted something that will change Christmas Day for so many people. Thank you Dunelm & thank you to all your customers, you’ve filled our hearts up with beautiful feelings! 💖💖💖

We started on our Distress Tolerance DBT module today and had a great session, so many shared experiences and great conversations on top of the learning. Really enjoying covering this and seeing how much sense it makes to everybody.

I practised making a natural moss bauble which has actually come out looking really lovely. So think we’ll be making some for the Sodit garden next week (or to hang inside if we can remember to mist them 😬😬)!

We’ve just dug up the last of our winter crops and shared them out so have some lovely baby celeriac and sweet potatoes to roast this weekend. Yum yum! 😋

All in all a very good day at Sodit!! 💖💖

We’ve had a great day today at Sodit. So nice to have some sunshine and get out in our garden!!

We have a couple of medical students on placement with us and it’s been lovely to see them enjoying our work so much just two days in. They took part in our Natural Connections group today planting lots of bulbs in the garden with the group members. The sun was in a lovely spot for nice shadows and we spent a bit of time observing the lovely way the flower shadows fell. Also there’s still plenty of colour we managed to find - snapdragons keeping going like the little troopers they are. We all left the session feeling better than we did this morning. 💖🌸

The students spent the afternoon taking part in our peer support group and had a blast. I really enjoyed watching them in the office - recapping over everything and learning how we communicate with the group through the rest of the week. We like to do a check in and see how everyone’s wellbeing is between sessions. So they don’t just get that one day of support - we are there for them all week if they need us.

I love that the university give the students this opportunity to learn in a different way and be part of an organisation like ours for a month. They learn so much from meeting the women who use our services and get to see how much help the charity sector offers to support people living with mental illness. I always feel it’s an experience that will make them better doctors in the future and our ladies always love having them.

Wellness Planning session & then Christmas decorations tomorrow! 😀🎄🎄

It’s been just over a year since we lost an important part of our team who used to keep us in check in the garden!

I’ve only just got to the point where I can talk about it but my Fly used to love coming to work with mum & he saw the garden grow from a patch of underused land into a space that was good for for the mental health of everyone.

He always had his head in every pot we were working in and loved being in the garden so much. I’m still deciding upon an area where I can remember him there, but here’s some pics of Fly Boy doing his thing for Sodit. We miss him so, but the memories are with us forever. As you can see when he was in he was our head gardener! ❤️

Was really excited to deliver the first session of our new DBT skills course today. It’s been a good while since I’ve taught any DBT stuff so it was lovely to get my teeth back into it. The course is particularly helpful for people with a diagnosis of BPD/EUPD, CPTSD and anyone who struggles to regulate their emotions.

We’ll be running it throughout next year so will put info up as soon as the next one is open for intake.

It was a lovely group of people today and we did it in our cosy room filled with comfy couches, lots of snacks, fidget toys and big doggy on hand for anybody that needed a cuddle. A brilliant morning - can’t wait to share more as we move through the modules! 💖

Another rainy day when we wanted to get outside enjoying Nature on Tuesday so we had to move inside and get our nature fix working with natural objects.
We also got some more of our wonderful nature inspired artwork up on the wall and started preserving some leaves in glycerine so we can create something that will last forever. There’s always a way to get close to nature even on those rainy days & we had a really lovely time and plenty of cups of Yorkshire Tea to keep us warm! ☕️ 😋 🍁 🍂

Survivors Of Depression In Transition (SODIT)

Supporting women in Sheffield who experience depression & mental health distress.

We are a support group for women who have/are suffered/suffering from depression and mental health illness. The overall aims are set out in our charitable papers but the main ones are - Empowering and supporting all women from the community who have experienced mental health distress - to educate the wider public in mental health issues relating to women and across all society - provide safe locations for meetings which have a friendly environment - to engage with all women regardless of inequalities.

Why the community needs us

Survivors of depression is all about giving women a chance to move on from their illness or period of life which has been very straining on family life and personal life. We have seen many women now who have managed to move on from the group towards a happy and fulfilling life. This is at the heart of what we do, and also what the government’s reform agenda in Health is about. We are very passionate about supporting women in Sheffield, and have been only funding on a very ad hoc basis.
