With screens being a big part of all children's lives now, whether it's a phone or an ipad, it is important to allow their eyes some time for a break.

Here are some quick tips for protecting your eyes:

➡️20-20-20 - every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at an object at least 20 metres away
➡️create sufficient space between your child's eyes and the screen

It is so important to look after your child's eyes!

It is recommended that you visit the optician every 2 years, however due to your child's needs or family eye history, we may suggest visiting every 6 months to a year.

Children may not always realise that they have a vision problem so without regular tests, there's a risk a problem may not be spotted. These can have huge negative impacts on your child’s development and confidence 🧒

Are you unsure if your child has difficulty with their sight? Here are some important things to look out for 🔎

➡️Being clumsy and bumping into things.
➡️Having problems with coordination eg catching and throwing
➡️Difficulties concentrating
➡️Complaining of headache

Even if your child is not showing signs of any of these, we strongly recommend regular eye tests as many issues can only be picked up during the course of an eye examination and early detection is crucial for successful management.

1 in 4 Sheffield children have a problem with their sight, but often they won’t tell you about it 🧒

Children are usually unaware that they have a vision problem as they think what they are seeing is normal 🔎

We recommend regular eye tests for children in order to detect vision problems. Seeing clearly improves a child's confidence and ability to learn!

What is Myopia? 👀

Myopia, or shortsightedness, is a common vision problem that often begins between the ages of 6 and 14 🧒

Myopia is blurry long-distance vision, often known as being “short-sighted’’ A person with myopia can see clearly up close but when reading a book or watching the TV, some words and objects may look blurry as a result.

In younger children, myopia progresses quicker because their eyes are growing at a faster rate.

To ensure your child isn’t suffering from early signs of myopia, we strongly recommend booking a child’s eye test.
