Living with tinnitus can impact much more than hearing, shaping how people sleep, focus, communicate and feel day to day.

In a study of 478 people with tinnitus, Tinnitus UK found that more than 8 in 10 had experienced low mood or anxiety, with around 7 in 10 reporting feelings of hopelessness or helplessness.

If any of this feels familiar, you’re not alone - and it’s okay to acknowledge the emotional impact tinnitus can have.

Support and understanding can make a real difference. Organisations like offer trusted information and a sense of community for people navigating tinnitus.

Taking even one small step towards support can help.

Tinnitus is far more common than many people realise.

Around 1 in 7 adults in the UK live with it.
For some, it’s an occasional or background sound. For others, it’s a constant sound that changes how they rest, work, and connect with the world around them.

Even though tinnitus is so widespread, it’s still often misunderstood - which can make it feel isolating for those experiencing it.

Raising awareness and encouraging open conversations is an important step in helping people feel informed, supported, and less alone.

Noticed ringing, buzzing or humming sounds that just won’t switch off?

You’re not alone - we see people with tinnitus every day. As clinicians, our role is to really listen and help you make sense of what’s going on with your hearing and tinnitus.

We’re a Sheffield-based audiology clinic with two practices - one located within Thornbury Hospital, Sheffield, and another in Dore. When you come in for a tinnitus assessment, we take the time to understand how your tinnitus is affecting you.

There’s no quick fix, but we offer personalised support - whether that’s sound therapy, hearing technology or practical strategies to make your tinnitus feel less intrusive over time.

If tinnitus is impacting your day-to-day life, we’re always happy to talk things through and guide you on next steps.

So when does sound actually start to become a problem?

In the UK, guidance suggests that around 80dB is the point where hearing risk should be assessed, and at 85dB, hearing protection is recommended if exposure continues. The louder the sound, the less time it takes for damage to occur.

In places like gigs, clubs and festivals, sound levels can often exceed these limits - sometimes for long periods and without clear warnings.

It’s not just how loud something is, but how long you’re exposed. Moderate noise over time or very loud noise in minutes can cause lasting damage, and repeated exposure adds up.

Reducing exposure and using hearing protection can help protect your hearing.

The evidence is clear: awareness alone isn’t enough - it’s time to turn it into action.

is calling for safer listening across live music, from clearer standards and better training for venues and professionals, to making hearing protection normal and accessible for everyone.

Here in Sheffield, live music culture is one of the cornerstones of our local community, so this issue is especially close to our hearts.

Protecting hearing health is a shared responsibility. Artists, venues, workers, audiences and policymakers all have a role to play in ensuring live music remains enjoyable, sustainable and safe - now and for future generations.

Is your child struggling with their hearing… but it’s not obvious? 👂

Hearing difficulties in children don’t always look like “not hearing” at all.
Small changes in behaviour, speech, learning or attention can sometimes be early signs that a child isn’t hearing clearly, even if it only happens in certain situations.

Tinnitus sound therapy doesn’t aim to remove tinnitus completely.
Instead, it uses carefully selected sound to reduce the contrast between tinnitus and silence, helping make it less noticeable over time.

Did you know your ears are designed to clean themselves? 👂

Normal ear wax production is actually a sign that your ears are doing their job properly - helping to keep the ear canal moisturised and protected from dust and bacteria.

That’s why wax doesn’t always need removing, and why cotton buds aren’t recommended, as they can interfere with the ear’s natural cleaning process.

In many cases, leaving wax alone is the healthiest option unless it’s causing discomfort or hearing changes.

If you’re unsure what’s normal for your ears, professional advice can help put your mind at ease.
