After a motocross accident in October 2024, Brendan sustained an incomplete C2 spinal cord injury, a cerebellum stroke and multiple fractures.

After 9 months of spinal cord rehabilitation, he is now walking again and even completed a 5km Park Run with the support of his family, friends and the team from STEPS Rehabilitation.

“From being in a chair and struggling to do transfers, to now being a confident guy walking around STEPS – he’s found Brendan again, and a sense of self through his journey.” - Hannah Wright, Senior Physiotherapist at STEPS Rehabilitation.

Sharing Innovation Internationally - Tayla’s Experience Delivering an ArmMotus™ EMU Workshop in Malaysia

In September, our Specialist Rehabilitation Occupational Therapist, Tayla Brons, was invited by Fourier Rehab to travel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where she delivered a hands-on workshop on the ArmMotus™ EMU, an innovative piece of robotic technology transforming upper limb rehabilitation.

Exploring innovation in upper limb rehabilitation
The workshop, held with the Occupational Therapy Department at Sunway Medical Centre, brought together a group of 15 occupational therapists keen to learn more about integrating robotic technology into clinical practice. Tayla led the session alongside Sarah Lim from Fourier Rehab, offering practical demonstrations, clinical insights, and opportunities for hands-on learning.

“The ArmMotus™ EMU is a highly versatile piece of equipment that supports a wide range of therapeutic goals. It can operate across multiple planes of movement and includes a feature that helps to de-weight the client’s upper limb. This means it can be used both for game-based therapy and to facilitate functional movements, depending on the client’s needs.”
When asked about her favourite feature, Tayla added:
“The gravity-compensating element is really exciting. It allows the client’s upper limb to be supported, enabling them to perform movements they may not have been able to complete before. Seeing that progress, when a client realises they can achieve something new, is always incredibly rewarding.”

Pain and Spinal Cord Injury

Around 50% of people with a spinal cord injury experience neuropathic pain. This can feel very different for everyone, with some describing it as burning, electric shocks, or pins and needles.

Dr Jasmine Hearn, a chartered psychologist and lecturer, explains that pain is complex and unique to each person. Mindfulness, CBT techniques, and recording what makes pain better or worse can all help. Having support from friends, family and healthcare professionals also makes a real difference.

At Back Up, we’ve brought together personal stories, expert guidance, and practical techniques to help people manage pain in their daily lives.

STEPS Rehabilitation’s Lead Physiotherapist, Jamie Storey Contributes to the taster day for medical students and foundation doctors run by the British Society or Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (BSPRM).

STEPS Rehabilitation’s Lead Physiotherapist, Jamie Storey, was delighted to take part in a Training Day held at the Northern General Hospital, organised by Mr Pradeep Thumbikat, president of the BSPRM and Clinical Director of the Sheffield Spinal Unit to introduce the doctors of the future, to the world of rehabilitation medicine.

The event brought together leading professionals in all aspects of rehabilitation medicine, providing a platform for learning, collaboration, and hands-on experience across a range of rehabilitation disciplines.

The day featured expert talks and practical sessions from consultants and specialists including Dr Lisa Grandidge, Dr Jo Corrado, Prof Derick Wade, and Prof Manoj Sivan, alongside first-hand insights from individuals living with spinal cord injuries, such as actor George Robinson and former STEPS client, Dr Ed Hudson. On behalf of STEPS Rehabilitation Jamie showcased the advanced upper limb exoskeleton, MyoPro® Mark 2, and other rehabilitation technologies, including the Stella BIO, Bioness L300 Go and Strolll®, during the practical rotation sessions. These demonstrations highlighted how cutting-edge technology can enhance recovery outcomes and independence for individuals following neurological or spinal injuries.

Skydive update ✈️☔

Sadly, due to Storm Amy ⛈️, Toria’s skydive this morning was postponed again.

We’ll share the new date as soon as it’s confirmed - Toria is still prepared to finally take to the skies (when they are a little less stormy) in aid of the STEPS Rehabilitation Foundation.

In the meantime, the fundraising link remains open, and every donation will go directly to supporting individuals rebuilding their lives after trauma:

Thank you so much for your support – and watch this space for the rescheduled jump soon!

✈️ Skydive Update✈️

All being well, and before Storm Amy ⛈️ makes an appearance, Toria will be taking to the skies tomorrow for a tandem skydive in aid of the STEPS Rehabilitation Foundation.

If you’d like to show your support, you can donate here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/laura-powell-3?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=CL&utm_campaign=015

Best of luck, Toria – we’ll all be cheering you on from the ground! 🪂✨

If you're visiting Lincolnshire this Wednesday, look up! ✈️

Our (very brave) Director, Toria Chan, will take to the skies at 15,000ft over Lincolnshire to take part in a tandem skydive, all in aid of the STEPS Rehabilitation Foundation 🪂

After a hard-fought fundraising 'vote-off' against STEPS Prosthetics Co-Founder, Colette Shaw, Toria is taking to the skies to support the Foundation's mission: helping individuals rebuild their lives after trauma, particularly those who have no other funding options available to them.

Although the race to see who would take part in the skydive is over, the donation link is still live. All proceeds will be donated to the STEPS Rehabilitation Foundation!
