Imagine youโre doing a downward dog stretch in a yoga class. But youโre really struggling; youโre super stiff, got a bit of a stomach ache and it actually quite hurts to bend your body in this way. Your instructor realises youโre struggling. โNot to worry!โ, they say. And they bring out a leather aid that will pull your body into the position that it needs to be in to please your instructor. Imagine having no say about it being strapped onto you. And so you are forced into this position, regardless of your pain, and made to continue on the class. The next week youโre dragged back into the same class, and your instructor points out at your bulging, sore muscles and says โlook, itโs working! Youโre getting stronger!โ. When, in reality, the pain is worse than ever before and the new muscle is pure hypertrophy and fibrosis.
It sounds like hell. So why are our own horses enduring this every day for the sake of โperformanceโ?
I said earlier that training wonโt fix pain. And incorrect training wonโt. The primary source of pain NEEDS to be addressed and resolved, and postural training can follow and be integrated. And pain occurs at a variety of different scales, from acute to chronic and mild to severe. Each horse must be treated as an individual.
You could spent hours and hours practicing, and your 20m circle will still look like a funky egg shape if your horse is not physically capable. I have previously come across a horse that did not want to work into an outline, but nothing could be wrong because they were perfectly fine in draw reins - two words, learned helplessness.
Before thinking that your horse is โjust being difficultโ, investigate the potential for pain as a contributing factor. Sometimes I get asked โIโm not sure whether I should investigate my horses pain, it could be nothingโ. And I always reply with, โif itโs nothing, then itโs nothing. But then at least you knowโ.
You have the power! Your horse will thank you. ๐ค
