Some very good advice here to look out for your horses and animals and keep them safe over fireworks weekend!

Most horse owners will dread this time of year (or New Year’s Eve) when fireworks seem to go on for many evenings, especially as horses and fireworks can be a difficult combination to manage. Here are a few tips on how you can be prepared and help your horse cope with fireworks:

🎇 Find out if there are any displays/fireworks planned near to where your horse is kept. Local press and shop notice boards as well as local radio and Facebook groups are a good source of information.
🎇 Contact organisers to explain your concerns. See if there are any measures they can take – for example, moving to the far end of a site and ask about timings so you can manage your horse appropriately.
🎇 It may be worth asking people living locally if they intend to have any private fireworks so that you can express your concerns and also be prepared.
🎇 Stick to your horse’s normal routine wherever possible as sudden changes may make him more unsettled. If he is usually stabled, keep him stabled. If he is normally out in the field, keep him out there as long as it is safe, secure and not close to a firework display area.
🎇 Wherever your horse is spending the night make sure it is safe and secure. If he’s staying in check his stable for protruding nails or loose string he could get caught up on. If he’s out in the field make sure your fencing is secure with no broken rails, no barbed wire and cleared of objects that could possibly injure him, such as farm machinery.
🎇 Playing music outside his stable can mask bangs. However, make sure you introduce this before firework night to ensure the music itself does not worry him.
Similarly leaving your stable lights on can help reduce the effect of sudden bright flashes in the night sky.
🎇 Make sure you are with him during the scheduled times for any local displays. If you can’t be there, ensure you have someone experienced checking on him throughout the duration of any displays.
🎇 Leave clear instructions for them as well as contact information for you and your vet should anything happen. If you know your horse gets very stressed around fireworks, consider moving him for the night or talking to your vet about sedation.
🎇 Remain calm and be very aware of your own safety when your horse is stressed. An injured owner is no good to anyone, including your horse!

If you have any concerns at all, please do not hesitate to call us.

Meet Oakley……… a new lovely boy just joined my client list! Been with his lovely new owner for 5 days with some knowledge of his past including low level eventing and a couple of “loan homes” do had some fun I’m guessing!! He didn’t have any major issues, but there was a very large amount of tension through his withers, back and pelvis area, pointing towards some past saddle issues! From the pictures you can see the difference in his posture and conformation pre to post treatment, lifting up through his trunk and abdomen creating a straighter balanced line through the back! I’m really looking forward to seeing how this boy improves with every treatment 🐎

Meet Ginger 😍
There’s worst ways to spend a morning than in the company of this gorgeous little man!!!!
This was Ginger’s second treatment. Since I previously saw him in February he has been treated to a new saddle as he was incredibly sore through his back and withers caused by his saddle being a little narrow.
Today he was holding tension in his withers and under the back of the saddle on his right side, causing the muscle to shorten making movement quite uncomfortable. He had a “flicking” action to his hind feet when moving and was leaning on the left side, rotating slightly!
There was a large area of muscle spasm with the left side of the neck which has been balancing his weight through movement. His Hind Quaters and outer thigh had tension spots, probably caused by the compensatory movement of the hind legs, rotating and flicking of the foot.
After these hot spots had been released, his muscles had been worked all over to encourage realignment and balanced free movement, he felt much better! I checked how his new saddle is sitting and the muscle movement, recommending a saddle fitter to assess and change some flocking to make him more comfortable. At his next visit we are going to assess the biomechanics movement of both ginger and his rider out of interest to see how his motion effects the rider balance! The results should be interesting 😊
