28 July is World Hepatitis Day

Hepatitis B is most commonly spread from mother to child at birth (perinatal transmission) or through horizontal transmission (exposure to infected blood). The development of chronic infection is common in infants infected from their mothers or before the age of 5 years.

A safe and effective vaccine that offers 98% to 100% protection against hepatitis B is available. Preventing hepatitis B infection averts the development of complications including chronic disease and liver cancer.

WHO recommends that all infants receive the hepatitis B vaccine as soon as possible after birth, preferably within 24 hours, followed by 2 or 3 doses of hepatitis B vaccine at least 4 weeks apart to complete the vaccination series.

Parents and carers encouraged to use Pharmacy First this summer

The NHS Pharmacy First service allows children to access treatment for five common conditions from their local pharmacy, without needing a GP appointment.

Children can receive NHS treatment, including antibiotics where appropriate, for five common conditions including:

impetigo (aged one year and over)
infected insect bites (aged one year and over)
earache (aged one to 17 years)
sore throat (aged five years and over)
sinusitis (aged 12 years and over).
The aim of Pharmacy First is to make it easier for people to get the help they need and free up millions of GP slots.

Parents can simply walk into a participating pharmacy and request a consultation for their child. If further treatment is needed, pharmacy teams will signpost families to the most appropriate local health service.

Hayley Patterson, NHS Humber and North Yorkshire ICB’s Pharmacy Lead, said: “As the school holidays approach, we are encouraging parents and carers to think Pharmacy First if their child is unwell, allowing them to be seen quickly and conveniently at their local pharmacy.

“The scheme enables community pharmacists, who are trained health professionals, to supply prescription-only medicines, where clinically appropriate, to treat five health conditions for children which would previously have required a GP appointment.”

The Pharmacy First scheme is also available for adults and covers the following seven common conditions:

sinusitis (adults and children aged 12 years and over)
sore throat (adults and children aged five years and over)
earache (children and young adults aged one to 17 years)
infected insect bite (adults and children aged one year and over)
impetigo (adults and children aged one year and over)
shingles (adults aged 18 years and over)
uncomplicated urinary tract infection (women aged 16 to 64 years).

Insect bites or stings are not usually serious and get better in a few days.
But sometimes they can become infected or cause a serious allergic reaction.

Bites from some insects can also cause illnesses, such as Lyme disease from ticks, scabies from mites, and malaria from mosquitoes in certain parts of the world.

The main symptoms of an insect bite or sting are:
- Pain where you were bitten or stung
- A small, swollen lump on the skin
The lump may look red.
It may be more difficult to see on black or brown skin, but you should be able to feel it.

Sarcoma awareness: Measuring and tracking a lump

If you have a lump, it’s important to be aware of any changes that may occur, so that you can keep your GP informed of your symptoms.
You can keep an eye on any changes to your lump by measuring and tracking it.

One of the most common symptoms of sarcoma is a lump which is growing, changing, or bigger than a golf ball. However, it’s important to note that if you have a lump, it doesn’t mean you have sarcoma. Sarcoma is very rare, and most lumps and pains will not be sarcoma. You should stay aware of any changes regardless to make sure that you get an accurate diagnosis.

24 July is Samaritans Awareness Day, because we’re here to listen 24/7

“I felt like I had no one to turn to. There was one night that I remember was really bad. It was the middle of the night, and I couldn't call anyone I knew because it was around 3am. I called Samaritans, I didn’t really know what I wanted to talk about, but I just wanted someone there, so I didn’t feel alone in that moment. The volunteer stayed on the phone and listened to me – let me cry and asked all the right questions without pushing me. To this day, I’m so appreciative of that Samaritans volunteer – she saved my life.”

The childhood vaccination programme is changing

The infant vaccination schedule is being evaluated constantly to give infants the best protection when they need it. Successful vaccination programmes result in better control of infectious diseases and reduction in the numbers of children becoming unwell and needing hospital treatment.
