🐜 Lice season is here! 🐜

If your horse is constantly scratching, it might be time for a clip ✂️

Lice are most common in horses with thick or long coats (cobs, natives, Cushing’s coats), as well as younger, older, welfare, or immunocompromised horses.

Signs to look for:
• Excessive itching and rubbing
• Bald patches or sores
• Dull, “moth-eaten” coat
What do they look like?
• Eggs: whitish-yellow, rice-like grains attached to the hair (often mistaken for dandruff)
• Adults: brown/grey and easiest to spot on clipped, light hair — you may see them moving
Clipping helps by exposing the skin and aiding treatment.

Always contact your vet for treatment advice.

🧼 Wash all rugs and grooming kit thoroughly and don’t share equipment.

If one horse has lice, check the rest — they spread easily!

Some great tips for anyone that might be struggling with the below 👇🏻

⭐⭐ Chorioptic mange - ‘Feather mites’ ⭐⭐

Chorioptic mange is caused by feather mites Chorioptes equi. The mites live on the surface layers of the horses skin but at 0.3 mm in size they are impossible to see by the naked eye! The mites feed on skin debris whilst they complete their life cycle.
The feeding and crawling action of the mite causes irritation which makes the horse itchy. This causes the classic signs we see such as stamping legs, rubbing and biting.

This itching causes skin trauma which can be in the form of scabs and bleeding. On rare occasions horses can also be allergic to the mites which makes the symptoms worse. The condition is usually worse in winter as the horse is stabled more.
Treatment is tricky as the mites are widespread in the horse’s environment.

Currently one of the best forms of treatment is doramectin or ‘Dectomax’ which is an injectable wormer similar to ivermectin although not licensed for use in horses. It is commonly used seems safe and generally works well. Two injections are given (under the skin or into the muscle) two weeks apart.

Prevention – includes clipping your horse’s feathers regularly means the mites do not have anywhere to live and breed. Reguarly changing your hroses bedding can also help. Regular application of Fipronil (Frontline) spray can be used off licence to control feather mites. Pig oil applied to the feathers can create a barrier to prevent mite numbers increasing but they won’t treat an infestation.
