Vitamin D is termed the “sunshine vitamin” as the primary route of synthesis is in the skin via UVB radiation from sunlight. In the summer months, 80-90% of our vitamin D is obtained via sun exposure, with as little as 10-20% coming from dietary sources.

The benefits of vitamin D are wide ranging as outlined above, however the major benefits come from maintaining an adequate level, (not becoming deficient) as opposed to achieving overly high concentrations.

It is not possible to synthesise vitamin D from sunlight in the
UK between October and March, and with minimal amounts contained within food, supplementation with vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) should be considered in the winter months.

It’s easier to maintain a habit than it is to start again.

Things like travel and holidays can end up causing a break in your nutritional norms for a much longer duration than the travel itself, simply because it’s harder to get back into a routine when ALL of your usual habits were out of the window for an extended period of time.

With some purposeful intention however, it is relatively easy to get in a good amount of protein, fruits and veggies despite the flights, hotels and time zone changes.

Even if you don’t hit your protein target or meal schedule perfectly while away, your efforts will be rewarded not only in the moment, but also because you’ll slip right back into your usual habits and routine when you return home.

Even amongst high performing individuals, packaged, calorie dense or processed foods are often thought of as inherently “unhealthy”.

Under-fuelling unfortunately so common in the performance space, and the idea that any food is “bad” is problematic for many reasons, but specific to performance nutrition, a lot of the foods that are often labelled as “bad” can be really beneficial.

With high training loads and high energy output, athletes will have immense difficulty meeting their optimal caloric and macronutrient needs using only whole foods, especially in and around training without feeling gut discomfort.

As long as you are ticking the boxes of

☑️ Plenty of fruit and veg
☑️ Some whole grains and fibre
☑️ Lots of water
☑️ Whole food sources of protein
☑️ Regular meals

then the strategic addition of processed foods can be of great benefit to meet increased needs 🔋📈🔥

Even if you “ate breakfast late”.
Even if it’s “too late for lunch”.
Even if you’re “going out for dinner”.
Even if you’re “out and about”.

Skipping lunch on the weekend never ends well. You either start picking at 3pm and don’t stop, or eat a dinner far larger than you need or want.

Make it smaller if you’ve had a big breakfast, have it a little later if you’re busy right now, just don’t skip it!

Somewhere along the line, giving your body the food it needs was called “maintaining”.

When compared to fat loss and muscle gain it’s not popular to say the least. People assume nothing is happening because they anticipate, well, staying the same.

This couldn’t be further from the truth.

In a well executed maintenance -

🔋 Energy levels will be optimal
💪🏻 You can push intensity with your training and recover well
🥙 You have flexibility in your daily intake
😋 It’s easiest to read and regulate hunger and satiety signals
👌🏻You are exerting the least amount of stress on your body.

Maintenance is where you should feel your very best. It’s the phase that should get the most attention, as it lays the foundation for all future phases in terms of habits, mindset, health and metabolism.

Catherine Prichard is an incredible woman.

Catherine came to me just over a year ago at the start of her chemotherapy treatment following a breast cancer diagnosis for the second time, with a passionate and focused determination to do everything she could to aid her recovery.

It was a privilege to work with her through her treatment, recovery, and in transitioning into what is now again a very full, healthy and active life.

Catherine’s inner strength and resilience is astounding. Each and every conversation we had was as educational, stimulating and thought provoking for me as it was for her, and I could not be more proud of not only what she has done, but where things are now going for her in the next chapter of her inspirational story.

Best job in the world 🙌🏻
