This week is Cervical Cancer Prevention week.
Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). It is a very common virus. 8 in 10 of us will come into contact with it in our lives but our bodies will clear the virus and it won't cause any issues. Rarely, HPV lingers and develops into cell changes or cancer.

Cervical screening tests are a test to help prevent cervical cancer, not diagnose it. The test looks for high-risk HPV, and if present, looks for changes to the cells. These cell changes aren't cancer but could turn into cancer over time. If your screening results show that you have high-risk HPV and cell changes, you will be referred to a gynaecologist and for a colposcopy which is a test to have a closer look at your cervix.

All young people will be offered the HPV vaccine in year 8 as part of the school's vaccination programme. The HPV vaccine has been shown to reduce the number of cervical cancers by 90%. You can get the HPV vaccine from your GP up until the age of 25, or up to 45 if you are considered to be in a higher risk group.

Cervical Cancer Prevention Week takes place from 19 to 25 January 2026.
The aim is to encourage women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64 to come forward for their cervical screening. It also offers an opportunity to share information and resources to help people make informed decisions about screening and tackle some of the barriers stopping people from being screened.

The Eve Appeal estimate that the UK's cervical screening programme saves over 5000 lives each year. On their website, they have tips for making a cervical screening appointment more comfortable. This includes tailored information for survivors of sexual violence, and for trans and non-binary people.

If you would like more information or wish to talk about cervical screening, you can speak to your local Macmillan Cancer Support Centres by phone, email or by dropping in to talk to one of the team. They have resources about the cervical screening programme that they can talk you through or send to you.
