This really emphasises the importance of learning CPR and being prepared to act in an emergency.

Will’s Saturday routine of attending his local Parkrun unexpectedly became a situation of life or death when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest.

Thanks to the quick action of those around him, Will survived. “I’ve had another birthday. Another Christmas,” he says. “More time with my wife, my daughters, and my grandchildren. CPR gave me more life.”

I have recently been experimenting with technology on my first aid courses in the form of CPR monitors. I know real people won't have them but they do provide real time feedback for the learners so they can refine their skills.

On the recent CHMAS Training EFAW course the candidates used the monitors to refinE their skills and then, at the end of the course the monitors were used in blind mode so they could only see their scores at the end. Let's just say some were very pleased with their score and others were keen to emulate the results too.

Our next open course is a 16hr outdoor course being run at Arthog Outreach on 5 & 6 March.

What's Happening This Week At CHMAS Training

Mon - EFAW First Aid Course
Fri - Personal Development Day

A fairly relaxed affair this week with a first aid course and some underground exploration. Junior Management leaves us once again this week to commence work as a singer for Park Dean Holidays.

Sometimes, everything just comes together and this week at Arthog Outdoor Education Centre was one of those weeks!

During the week, the group had lots of mini adventures that included a visit to Dolgoch Audits, canoeing, a trip to a medieval castle and a trip to a bothy to toast marshmallows, a scrambling session at the beach, a sporting gorge walking session and some beach art

The group were simply in awe of the views from the castle and the challenge of walking up the gorge. For me, it was lovely to see the group grow in confidence and push themselves to complete the activity.

To cap off the week, I received a lovely post card from one young person that almost brought a tear to my eye.

A few thoughts from my latest Outdoor First Aid course for Arthog Outreach.

Read the room and engage the learners with scenarios, PowerPoint, talk throughs and group discussion whatever works for them. There is no one size fits all for training. Leave time for repeat activities, self reflection and peer learning.

Teach topics sensitively so that no one is left feeling uncomfortable. Read the room!

If you don't know the answer to a question then say so but do go and research it and come back to them.

That way, the learners will leave with increased confidence in their abilities and as a trainer you will receive honest feedback.

That's what you'll get on a CHMAS Training first aid course. Our next one is on the 5&6 March at Arthog Outreach.
