Eczema and dermatitis are caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and immune factors. Some of the key causes include:
Genetics: If you have a family history of eczema, dermatitis, asthma, or hay fever, you are more likely to develop these conditions. A gene mutation that affects the skin’s barrier function can make the skin more prone to irritation and allergic reactions.
Allergens and Irritants: Contact with allergens (e.g., pollen, pet dander, dust mites) or irritants (e.g., harsh soaps, cleaning products, fabrics) can trigger dermatitis flare-ups.
Environmental Factors: Changes in weather, particularly cold or dry air, can exacerbate symptoms. Heat and humidity may also trigger flare-ups, particularly for atopic eczema.
Immune System: Eczema and dermatitis involve an overactive immune response, which causes the skin to become inflamed, itchy, and irritated when exposed to certain triggers.
Stress: Emotional stress is a known trigger for both eczema and dermatitis, as it can weaken the skin’s ability to repair itself.
Infections: Skin infections (bacterial, viral, or fungal) can lead to or worsen dermatitis flare-ups.
