April is Autism Awareness Month, so what does that mean? We've all heard of autism and we probably all know someone who is autistic. So what's important to be aware of? Well these are the things I'd love more people to think about:

Communication takes many forms, it's not just talking.

Progress is not just about conforming to 'typical' expectations.

Creating sensory-friendly environments benefits everyone.

I'd love to see us moving beyond awareness, to genuine inclusion. I want more of us to listen to autistic voices, challenge stereotypes and celebrate neurodiversity.

I'd recommend following the following neuro divergent people on Instagram who are doing fantastic work in this space -

In addition to her role as a Speech and Language Therapist, Claire is currently studying with Sheffield Hallam University to become a Sensory Integration Practitioner.

Sensory integration is the process by which we receive, organise and interpret sensory input from our body and environment. It's what helps us to smoothly catch a ball, walk on uneven ground, or feel relaxed despite being in a busy or loud space.

For some people, this process can be challenging, making everyday experiences feel overwhelming or confusing. Claire already considers all children's sensory needs in her sessions, but this additional qualification will allow her to assess children's sensory needs and to plan therapy to support them.

Exciting times ahead!!

I'm not very good at the social media (or website!) side of running a business...in fact I generally find it hard to keep on top of admin with an in demand small business (and busy family life!) but with an admin assistant starting with me in the next few weeks I'm hoping to have a bit more time to post content which may be useful to you.

I'd love to hear from you what might be useful, any suggestions of topics and content and things you'd like to see. Please send me a message or drop a comment below if you have ideas for me!

In the meantime, I thought I'd share this testimonial from Amy, whose daughter Izzy I have recently discharged. I'm sharing this with her permission:

'We are so grateful to have found Claire. It's been life-changing for all of us. Claire made the sessions so fun that Izzy always looked forward to seeing her. When we first contacted Claire, people couldn't understand Izzy and it broke my heart to see her trying to share stories but not being understood. Now, things couldn't be further from that - Izzy's speech is so clear and we are just so proud of her. Claire explained everything she was doing all the way along and it really felt like we worked together. I've learnt so much!'

Maternity leave - done!

Today marks the last official day of my Maternity leave... Where on earth did that go?

I'm back at work from tomorrow, but it will be part time and my availability is very limited. I think I have booked everyone in who has been waiting, but if you were expecting to hear from me and haven't then please let me know!

Thank you for your continued support.

I've heard both of these men share their stories about living with Verbal Dyspraxia in various interviews, it will be incredible to see them together. It's so fantastic to see Verbal Dyspraxia in the mainstream media too; the more awareness we raise and the more the general public understand, the easier it is for people living with the condition.
Looking forward to watching this!

CHRIS KAMARA: LOST FOR WORDS

Wednesday 14th December at 9 pm on ITV1!

“Chris Kamara is set to open up on the speech condition that he has recently been diagnosed with in an emotional ITV documentary made by his friend and co-star Ben Shephard.
It will follow his personal journey from denial through diagnosis and to the disciplined way he now manages his therapy.
He will meet others living with verbal dyspraxia/apraxia and will shine a light on the rare condition that doctors know very little about.”

Who will be watching?

You might just see a familiar face.

I was fortunate enough to see this new local business in action recently and can't recommend them enough. Gorgeous, neutral soft play perfect for parties or even just a lovely play day at home.

The range of sensory toys and play opportunities has been so well thought through and there's a great range of items to hire.

Not affiliated with the company, just love what they're doing!

Luxury soft play hire for your little ones, created for under 5s and designed to engage and delight!

So, somehow we're in 2022! Enquiries through this page and my website have sky rocketed again and I am at full capacity. I am so sorry not to be able to help everyone that contacts me and I really wish I could.

This seems a good time to explain one of the reasons that my waiting list is closed... I'm actually going on maternity leave in May and so am now winding down my caseload ready for our new arrival!

I am planning to return to work early next year (January 2023) and so will be opening my waiting list later this year to book people in on my return.

While I'm on maternity leave I will be able to offer some online consulting, but there will be limited slots available for this.

Thank you for your continued support, it is so appreciated. I will update here and on my website when my waiting list opens.

Happy 2022 all.
