More pics from my recent 'Wild Pharmacy - Autumn Roots & Bark' workshop. We had a lovely fire to keep us warm which I didn't capture sadly. Such a magnificent location, very dramatic and deeply peaceful up near Rhiwargor Waterfall.
We made a Wild Cherry bark, Marshmallow root, Elecampane root,Thyme & Liquorice root cough syrup; a marigold petal lip balm and wound healing salve and a Fire Cider ( horseradish root, cayenne peppers, ginger, garlic & onion), designed to fight off infections, increase circulation and generally put hairs on your chest! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿคญ๐Ÿ˜†

Out in the Wild Cherry ๐Ÿ’ woods โค๏ธ foraging for wild cherry bark (Prunus avium). It will be going in the cough syrup potion we'll be making at the Lake Vernwy RSPB 'Wild Pharmacy - autumn roots & bark' workshop tomorrow.
It's great for dry tickly coughs. Prunus serotina the American version is more commonly used but our native one is a good substitute. Other ingredients will be Marshmallow root, Elecampane root, Liquorice root and Thyme. The formula is a good all rounder for both dry and congested coughs.
We'll also be making Fire Cider and Marigold lip balm.
We'll also be having a camp fire to keep us warm.
Can't wait

What a great time we had at the Autumn equinox retreat weekend at Treflach farm. We foraged for seasonal herbal remedies like Hawthorn berries, Rosehips, Elderberries, Sloes and Yarrow flowers.
We made a yarrow ointment for healing cuts, wounds, bites, stings and rashes - a great addition to the medicine cabinet. Also a mixed berry tincture packed with antiviral properties, vitamin C & flavonoids to prevent and treat common winter ailments like coughs, colds and flu.
Together with the yoga, meditations and sound bath, everyone should be well placed now to embrace the Autumn with ease and a sense of well-being ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿต๏ธ๐Ÿ™

GROUND IVY (GLECHOMA HEDERACEA)

Ground ivy, also known as Alehoof was used to flavour ale, when you drink it you can see why. It's so aromatic due to it's volatile oils, it has a smokiness and somehow an unusual mintiness as it belongs to the mint family (Labiatae). It's also got a mild bitterness (glechomine) and astringeny due to the tannins, this also gives it a full bodied flavour. It makes a lovely herb tea.
It can be found growing commonly at the bottom of hedges.
Ground ivy is an excellent digestive remedy working on the liver and digestive enzymes due to it's bitter quality. Useful for all manner of digestives ailments. In addition to this it's great for the respiratory system as an anti-catarrhal due to the higher tannin content. It's used for colds, hayfever, rhinitis, ear infections and sinusitis and coughs.

Fantastic Herbal Medical Workshop at the heavenly Oriel Davies art gallery in Newtown. What a gorgeous space, a real treat to be invited.
This week we made Fire Cider to help ward off the winter bugs. It contains fresh horseradish root, garlic, ginger, onions and cayenne pepper. It certainly packs a punch! Many of the herbs are strongly antibacterial but also enhance circulation and aid digestion. ๐Ÿฅต๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŒถ๏ธ
We also made Cold Season herbal teabags, containing the classic diaphoretic herbs Elderflowers, Yarrow flowers and Peppermint. They work by increasing blood flow to the skin, promoting perspiration and thereby enhancing elimination of toxins.
Can't wait to make next week's Cough syrup!
