You've probably heard that gravity can be really useful in labor. Being upright helps your baby to move down through your body. That just makes logical sense, right?

Here are some of the ways gravity can help you. Let's get into it:

1. Being upright means that your baby is applying pressure to your cervix, which stimulates contractions and facilitates dilation.

Birth partners: support and encourage the birthing mother to be upright!

2. Your womb moves out and up as your contraction rises. Leaning forward means that it can glide effortlessly in the direction it's trying to go, making contractions much more manageable. If you are not able to be upright, avoiding a supine position (on your back) is extremely helpful. Try all-fours or sidelying โ˜บ๏ธ

3. Gravity helps to bring the heaviest part of the baby down (back of head and spine). If your baby is not in the "optimal" position for birth, an all-fours position may assist with that.

4. What's your baby's head is out, there is usually a short pause before the next contraction and the birth of the rest of the body. During this pause, the build up of fluid and mucus in the baby's airways is drained away - gravity can help enormously with this process.

This is my comment:

Is lack of monitoring the problem, though?

As I understand it, an increase in continuous monitoring doesn't improve outcomes for mother or baby.

Increase in "listening to women" might actually help. Do you have a fancy gadget for that?

A New Item on the Pregnancy To-Do List?
In recent years, colostrum harvesting has become a hot topic in antenatal care. Midwives across the UK are handing out syringes in the third trimester and encouraging pregnant women to start collecting their first milk. For some, this feels like an empowering step toward feeding their baby. But for others, it adds pressure, confusion, and even shame.

Women are starting to ask: โ€œDo I need to do this?โ€
Doulas are asking: โ€œWhatโ€™s the benefit, and whatโ€™s the emotional cost?โ€

This article offers a compassionate and balanced look at colostrum harvesting, what it is, when itโ€™s helpful, when it might not be, and how itโ€™s making some women feel like failures before their babies have even arrived.
