Safeguarding Week – What Does a Safer Culture Look Like?

As we celebrate the final day of Safeguarding Adults Week, we’re shining a light on what safer cultures really look like in practice the everyday behaviours and values that help keep people safe, respected, and empowered.

Here are some real examples of safer cultures:

🌟A workplace where people feel confident to speak up and raise concerns
🌟Open, honest communication at every level
🌟Leaders who model good practice and prioritise safeguarding
🌟Values-based recruitment that focuses on empathy, integrity, and kindness
🌟Regular, meaningful training that builds confidence
🌟Clients whose voices, choices, and experiences are truly listened to
🌟Reflective practice that helps us learn and grow
🌟Positive risk-taking that supports independence
🌟Clear boundaries and consistent professional behaviour
🌟Teams that look out for one another’s wellbeing

These everyday actions help create strong, supportive environments where safeguarding isn’t just a policy it’s part of our culture.

If you have examples or stories of good practice you’d like to share, we’d love to hear them!

Safeguarding Week – Trust Your Instincts

Today’s focus is all about strengthening our courage and resilience so we feel confident to speak out when something doesn’t seem right.

Trusting your instincts is a powerful safeguarding tool. When we listen to that inner voice the one that says “something feels off” we play an active role in protecting others and promoting safer environments.

We’re exploring both individual and organisational tools that help build supportive cultures where people feel safe to raise concerns, challenge poor practice, and act quickly when needed.

Because safeguarding thrives best in workplaces where:

People feel heard
Speaking up is encouraged
Concerns are taken seriously
Everyone understands their role in keeping others safe

By trusting our instincts and supporting each other, we help create safer, stronger, and more confident communities.

Your voice matters.

Safeguarding Week – Creating Empowering Environments

Today we’re focusing on what it truly means to create environments where people feel supported, understood, and empowered.

By using approaches rooted in empathy, understanding, co-production, and positive risk-taking, we can build trauma-informed practices that make a real difference. When we take the time to understand a person’s experiences and involve them in decisions about their own care, we help them feel respected, valued, and in control.

These approaches don’t just benefit the people we support they also help our staff feel more confident, knowledgeable, and empowered in their own roles.

Creating empowering environments is about working with people, not just for them. It’s about building trust, encouraging independence, and supporting everyone to reach their full potential.

Together, we can continue to build care and community settings where people feel safe, confident, and truly empowered.

Safeguarding Week – Prevention in Practice

Today we’re looking at how prevention really works in practice and the vital role leadership plays in setting the tone for safer, more supportive environments.

Strong safeguarding cultures don’t happen by accident. They grow from good governance, clear values, and leaders who model the behaviours they expect from others. This includes making sure we use values-based recruitment, provide meaningful training, and create spaces where people feel confident, informed, and safe to speak up.

We’re also reflecting on the difference between three types of cultures:

Complicit Culture – concerns are ignored, voices are silenced, and unsafe behaviours go unchallenged.

Compliant Culture – policies exist and boxes get ticked, but deeper understanding and confidence are missing.

Confident & Competent Culture – everyone feels responsible for safeguarding, understands their role, and takes proactive steps to keep people safe.

Prevention isn’t a one-off action — it’s a mindset. It’s the everyday choices and behaviours that build safer environments for everyone.

Together, we can create cultures where safeguarding isn’t just a requirement… it’s a shared commitment.

Prevention: Act Before Abuse

Safeguarding Adults Week 2025 is all about prevention.

Usually, when people talk about “safeguarding”, they are talking about the policies and procedures we might put into place to respond to concerns of abuse, or to minimise the risk of a person being harmed or abused again. They are also talking about the lessons we might learn from past cases of abuse.

Safeguarding isn’t just about responding to concerns it’s also about building a culture where risks are reduced, people feel safe to speak up, and wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do.

And while we focus on positive prevention, we also never forget the importance of recognising poor practice. Spotting small concerns early helps stop them from escalating into something more serious.

Together, we can create safer, stronger, more supportive communities.
