Massage is a great technique that can be used to help reduce muscle tightness and soreness. It can also be used as part of a warm up especially with agility dogs, as it helps increase the blood flow to the muscles.
Massage helps to relieve the compensatory effects caused by common conditions such as, hip or elbow dysplasia. These conditions cause compensatory issues in the muscles due to changes in the way the dog moves, changes include soreness and/or tightness often due to lameness and tightness in the muscles as the animal is likely to shift its weight away from the painful joints.
The compensatory changes caused by arthritis can be treated using massage. Not only can it provide a sense of well being and relaxation, it can also help to reduce muscle tension and soreness due to compensations caused by changes as described above.
Other conditions such as a ruptured cruciate ligament or a luxating patella will also cause compensatory changes as the animal will avoid the use of the painful leg, which can continue for some time after surgery too. During this time the rest of the body has to compensate and carry the weight elsewhere. After surgery, swelling can often appear around the operation site. Massage can help to reduce the swelling and improve lymphatic drainage.
