How was your Easter? 🐣

Our residents have had a fantastic bank holiday weekend, thanks to our amazing team members who always go above and beyond to create memorable experiences.

With visits from the Easter Bunny, themed decoupage making, seasonal face paint and chocolate galore, the day provided a wonderful opportunity for residents to share stories and enjoy the festivities together.

It was plain to see that the celebrations truly went down a treat, as did the Easter eggs! 💛

Greenholme House have been busy 🧶

The Greenholme House Knit & Natter Club came together with other residents, team members and members of the local community to craft 25 pairs of hand‑knitted palliative care hearts for Leeds Cancer Centre at St James’s Hospital.

One heart is placed with the person who has passed away, and the matching heart is given to a loved one to keep as a symbolic gift of connection. The hearts were gratefully received by the Ward Clerk, Teresa Foster, who was very appreciative to have received such a thoughtful donation.

The home plans to continue supporting the Cancer Centre where possible, through more knitting initiatives and fundraising activities 💙

Many of our homes recently celebrated Nutrition & Hydration Week, focusing on how important a balanced diet and keeping hydrated is for boosting our well-being.

From smoothie tasting and fruit carving to interactive quizzes, everybody appreciated discovering new ways to keep healthy, especially with such tasty spreads of nutritious food to enjoy!

Overall, our fantastic teams and residents were able to create some truly meaningful moments, sparking joy and opportunities for connection over new-found favourites.

An orchestral morning at Birchmere House! 🎻

The fantastic and world-renowned City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) recently visited the home for a special private performance, where residents, team members and guests from the local community excitedly filled the lounge to capacity.

The classical programme was thoroughly enjoyed by all, sparking a truly moving atmosphere and bringing back many treasured memories from the past. Visitors were also touched to hear that the orchestra had chosen to visit Birchmere House, instead of joining the rest of the orchestra on a trip to Europe, marking the day as a truly special occasion.

One resident, Geoff, expressed “This has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me, something I will never forget. I can’t believe they are here in my home.”

We would like to say a huge thank you to the CBSO for such a brilliant experience.

Cutlery Free Dining 🍽️

There are many reasons why a resident may struggle to use cutlery, from Parkinson's disease to arthritis and beyond.

Nobody should have to miss out on nutritional, tasty meals due to differing personal care needs, or be stigmatised as the 'odd one out' at the table.

At Avery, we do things differently - our chefs and culinary staff are provided with a series of bespoke workshops, tips and guidance on how to make the menu inclusive for everybody, by adapting meals in ways which make them easy to eat without cutlery.

For example, a roast dinner can be adapted into a cutlery free meal, by the clever use of a filled Yorkshire pudding, or a curry may be eaten with chapatis or naan bread.

Every resident who opts for Cutlery Free Dining deserves to feel comfortable and fulfilled at meal times, and we are proud to be able to make this possible with some simple adjustments 💙

A Star Trek love story 💘

Kath and George Clarke, two of our lovely Loxley Park residents, recently shared the story of how they met with us and it truly is out of this world!

As devoted Trekkies, the pair shared their first encounter at a convention in Leicester in 1982. Kath was sporting a brilliant blue outfit, which George immediately recognised as representing one of the USS Enterprise’s science officers - it was love at first sight!

The two married a few months later, in Barnsley Town Hall, and continued to attend many conventions together, as well as developing a love for beer festivals in their later life.

Beaming forward to January 2025, the pair found themselves at Loxley Park. Kath has a trapped nerve in her knee, making accessiblity extremely important for her. Our convenient lifts provide just the ease that Kath needs to get around comfortably, and the pair are also happy to have made many new friends.

Roll up, roll up 🎪

The Grand Opening of Alice Court Care Home went down a treat, with local community groups, professionals, neighbours and residents of other local Avery and Hawthorns communities coming together for the occasion.

The Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Margaret Bannister, officially opened the home, who are now excited to be welcoming new residents in the community.

Visitors enjoyed a day full of fun activities, with some truly impressive acrobatic performances, classic circus games to get stuck into, and live music to fill the room. One guest even found his wedding ring attached to his keys after an encounter with magician, Matt King!

With personalised tours, refreshments and the chance to chat to residents and team members, the day provided a great opportunity for the local community to experience a taste of the stunning facilities, compassionate care, well-being and activities on offer at Alice Court.
