Did you know that private ear wax removal in the UK is largely unregulated?

This means the person doing your ear wax removal treatment might not be a suitably trained and qualified hearing care professional.

You know you are in safe hands with recourse if dealing with

1). a bona fide audiology clinic regulated by the HCPC for ear wax removal

or

2). a nurse that is regulated for ear wax removal by the CQC in their own right

or alternatively

3). a nurse working under the umbrella of CQC registration within an NHS setting.

An ear wax removal specialist is inserting sharp objects into the delicate ear canal, there is potential to cause ear infections and to miss potentially referrable conditions and / or misunderstand what they are looking at / for in the same way that an optician is looking for referrable conditions when prescribing glasses.

Unbelievably, anyone can attend a 1 or 2 day course with no qualifications or relevant background, have a very minimal amount of training and then unsupervised set themselves up as an ear wax removal ‘expert’.

Ear wax removal is a serious business, we believe it should be strictly in the remit of regulated and adequately trained and skilful practitioners with professional oversight and recourse, and really should not be left to chance.

Our tips when you are looking to book an ear wax removal appointment is to ask the following questions:

1. Ask what qualifications and clinical / audiological background the person who is doing the treatment has?
2. How long have they been doing ear wax removal?
3. Have they got any other hearing or medical related qualifications other than just ear wax removal?
4. Do they have professional indemnity insurance?
5. Which regulatory body do they answer to?

Ear wax removal by microsuction, irrigation and dry removal for blocked ears - availability 1-2 days typically. Fast and efficient.

On 24/9/25 HAB Hearing and FM Hearing Systems were asked by one of our long-standing hearing aid clients to present to the group about the subject of hearing loss, hearing aid technology and assistive devices.
In attendance were 45-50 interested members of the U3a (University of the Third Age) interested in how we do things, how the technology around hearing loss works, and the wide range of solutions available.
What a lovely bunch of people we met on the day, everyone including us got a lot out of a very enjoyable session with excellent feedback.
If you live in the Ilkley area and are not yet involved in U3a and running up to or in retirement we strongly recommend getting involved!
