“Sure all you do is play… how hard can it be?”

Therapeutic play isn’t just play.

Play is the language children use to express what words cannot. Fear, anger, confusion and hurt often appear through characters, stories, movement and imagination.

A trained therapist listens beyond the game. Patterns, themes and emotions within the play begin to tell the real story.

The role of the therapist is to hold a safe, attuned space where a child can explore difficult experiences at a pace that feels manageable.

It may look like play.

But within that play, healing begins.

😱 All behaviour is communication 😱

When a child is struggling, their behaviour is often their way of telling us something isn’t right.
The shouting.
The anger.
The tears.
The shutting down.
The clinginess.
The “acting out”.

It can feel confusing and exhausting as a parent. But underneath the behaviour there is usually a feeling that a child doesn’t yet have the words for.

Children may show big behaviour when they are experiencing things like:
⭐Bereavement or loss
⭐Anxiety or worries
⭐A new sibling joining the family
⭐Changes at home or school
⭐Friendship struggles
⭐ Low self-esteem
⭐ Confidence struggles
⭐ Questions about who they are and where they fit

Children’s brains are still developing. They are not being “difficult”. They are often having a difficult time.

💛 This is where therapeutic play and creative arts can help. Play is a child’s natural language. Through play, art, stories and creative expression, children can share feelings safely without needing the right words.

In a safe, supportive space children can:
🌠Express big feelings
🌠Make sense of their experiences
🌠 Build confidence and self-esteem
🌠 Learn ways to cope with worries
🌠 Feel seen, heard and understood

When a child feels understood and supported, their nervous system can settle — and behaviour often begins to soften.
Because when a child’s voice can be heard, their behaviour no longer needs to shout.

✨ If your child is struggling and you would like to learn more about therapeutic play, please send a DM or email neuroplayni@gmail.com

💬“I can’t go to school.”💬

For some children, those words aren’t defiance, they’re distress.

Children experiencing Emotionally Based School Non Attendance (EBSNA) are often navigating anxiety, sensory overwhelm, social demands, or emotional stress that feels too big for their nervous system right now.

They are not being difficult, they are communicating that something doesn’t feel safe.

Children don’t always have the words to explain what they are experiencing, but they can express it through play, creativity, and imagination.

Through therapeutic play and creative arts therapy, children are given a safe space to explore their feelings, process experiences, and feel understood without pressure, because when children feel safe, seen, and supported, their confidence and capacity begin to grow.

At NeuroPlay, we honour each child’s unique way of experiencing the world.

💬 If school has become a daily struggle for your child, you are not alone.

✨ For parents who feel their child may be struggling with worries or big emotions… you’re not alone ✨

We love using therapy puppets alongside stories in our sessions because they create a gentle and engaging way for children to explore their feelings.

For many children, talking directly about worries or big emotions can feel overwhelming, but when stories and puppets are involved, children often feel safer and more comfortable sharing what’s going on for them. Through storytelling and play, children can begin to talk about worries, understand their emotions, and build confidence in expressing themselves.

This approach can help children work through worries such as:
✨Starting a new school or moving to post-primary
✨Friendship difficulties or feeling left out
✨Changes at home or moving house
✨ Anxiety about school or learning
✨Big emotions like anger, sadness, or fear
✨ Changes in family life

Using stories and puppets helps children feel supported, heard, and understood while building emotional resilience and confidence.

💬 If you feel your child might benefit from some extra support, we would be very happy to talk with you.

🌈 Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2026 🌈

At NeuroPlay, we are proud to support the emotional wellbeing of neurodivergent children and young people through therapeutic and creative arts.

Supporting neurodivergent children requires more than good intentions it requires the right qualifications and lived experience.

Professional training ensures safe, informed and effective support, while lived experience brings deep empathy, understanding and connection.

At NeuroPlay, we have both because children deserve support from people who not only understand neurodiversity professionally, but who truly understand it personally.

This Neurodiversity Week, we celebrate neurodivergent minds and continue creating spaces where every child feels seen, understood and empowered to thrive 💛

Big feelings can arrive like waves 🌊

For children, emotions such as frustration, worry, anger, or sadness can sometimes feel overwhelming. They may not yet have the words to explain what is happening inside, but their behaviour often shows us that something big is being felt.

Through therapeutic play, children are given the space to experience emotions safely rather than push them away. Instead of trying to stop the wave, we help children learn that feelings can rise, peak, and eventually pass.

When children feel supported and understood, they begin to realise that emotions, even the big ones, are something they can move through. Over time they develop confidence in their ability to ride those waves rather than feel swept away by them.

🌊 Feelings come and go
🌊 Every wave passes
🌊 Children don’t have to ride them alone

If you would like to learn more about how therapeutic play can support your child, or if you would prefer a parent only consultation, feel free to send a DM or email neuroplayni@gmail.com.

Today we recognise and celebrate the many people who nurture, support, and care for children every day 💛

To the mums, step-mums, foster carers, grandmothers, guardians, and all the wonderful mother figures who show up with patience, love, and strength. We see you and appreciate all that you do.

We also know that Mother’s Day can bring many different emotions. For those missing their mum, caring for a mum who is unwell, navigating complex family journeys, or finding today difficult in any way. We’re thinking of you too.

From all of us at NeuroPlay Kids Therapy, we wish you a gentle and supportive Mother’s Day 💐
