Dying Matters Awareness Week started on 4th May and runs until 10th May 2026 this year

“Let’s talk about death and dying.”

It’s a simple message, but one that can feel difficult to start. This week is about opening up conversations, sharing wishes, and making those important moments a little easier for the people we love.

At Tarn Moor, we see just how valuable these conversations can be. When people feel able to talk openly, it helps create more personal, meaningful farewells that truly reflect a life lived 🌳

Surrounded by nature, our grounds offer a calm and reflective space where these conversations can happen more gently, giving time to think about what matters most, both now and in the future. 🌿

💭 Could this be the week you start the conversation?

Knowing what a loved one wants when they die involves discussing their preferences for care, funeral arrangements, and legacy while they are able. Key areas include burial or cremation.

Whether it’s discussing your wishes, asking questions, or simply listening, every conversation matters.

Discussing these topics, while difficult, can reduce the pressure and emotional burden on family members, providing comfort that they are doing what their loved one wanted. It's not just about the end: These conversations are often about ensuring the person dies with dignity.

Their presence alone attracts and supports several key species in the local ecosystem, including native bees, butterflies, moths, and birds, which in turn pollinate fruits, vegetables, herbs, and other flowers that feed even more species.

We don't know about you, but we just love to see the yellow dandelions popping up all over the place now 💛

What Do Dandelions Symbolize? Dandelion generally symbolizes happiness, joy and youthful thoughts, but can also symbolize health, power, perseverance, endurance and determination. It's also said to represent the sun's power, good wishes, hope and prosperity 💛

Rachel Hawthorn who also starred in the TV appearance popped in to see us last week.

Rachel, from Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, made a burial shroud for a friend from locally-sourced wool, willow, bramble and ivy, as part of her work as an artist.

For years she has explored the themes of death, dying, grief and nature through crafts and functional objects.

A common reaction from those who have seen the creation is to ask if they can touch it, to feel how soft it is.

For Rachel, it is the perfect way of helping people address the taboo topic of death.

She also works as a death doula, which involves supporting people who are dying, as well as their loved ones, to make informed funeral care choices.

She's exploring some new ideas and wants to incorporate using the wool from the sheep 🐑 who graze near Tarn Moor into her work and burial shrouds.

She showed us how she naturally died the wool in bogs in the Dales - look at the wonderful colours it's produced ✨️ 🤎 and yes, it's really soft! We can vouch for that 😊

She's going to keep us up to date with her ideas and then we can share some more of her wonderful produce ❤️

Thank you for visiting us, Rachel 😊

Tony was greeted by the beautiful, warm, spring sunshine yesterday as he was laid to rest in his new forever home 🏡 🌳

Tony and his family were first looked after by Co-op Funeralcare, Purley after spending his later years in South London.
With history and links to the Dales, Tony spent many years living in Barnoldswick and so it was his final wish to be buried in Yorkshire - a place he held special in his heart ❤️ And who can blame him!
He was then carefully looked after leading up to his burial by Co-op Funeralcare, Keighley.

When Tarn Moor first opened there was an incentive for locals in Skipton to be able to be buried here for a discounted fee. This still applies today.
Although people from outside the area are still able to purchase a plot, this fee is more expensive, but still affordable.
Do speak with us for more information ℹ️

Tony's family held a celebration of his life earlier in the week, leaving them to hold their own intimate, private and final farewell yesterday morning, here at Tarn Moor 😞

Special thanks to Team Blades for their immaculate grave preparation ⚰️

Here in Skipton the Dales is right on our doorstep ⛰️ 🌳 We are so lucky aren't we!
The Yorkshire Dales is one of the most spectacular and diverse landscapes in England — a place of rolling green hills, dramatic limestone cliffs, peaceful valleys, charming stone‑built villages and some of the best walking routes in the country.

So it only seems right that we were able to bury the ashes of Tony Grogan yesterday - writer and publisher of walk guidebooks in the Dales.

The Dales High Way story is an interesting one. It was the creation of Tony and Chris Grogan, a unique husband and wife team who are walkers, writers, photographers, cartographers and publishers. Tony and Chris operate their specialist publishing company, Skyware Press from their home in Saltaire.

A Dales High Way is now an officially accepted route within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and in both Bradford and Cumbria. It is marked on Ordnance Survey maps as a recreational path and the distinctive waymark is now increasingly used along the route and as a logo in publicity.

Tony's wife laid him to rest in a glorious plot overlooking Embsay Crag in the beautiful sunshine. A very personal and emotional goodbye 💔💙❤️

✨29th April ✨
Happy National Peace Rose Day 🌹

Today we celebrate the timeless beauty and symbolism of the Peace Rose — a bloom born from hope during war, now a reminder of unity, resilience, and love.
Let’s take a moment to reflect on the peace we can grow in our own community.

Peace Roses symbolise love and affection, and have a delightful scent 🩷

Yesterday we welcomed Paul to the Tarn Moor family 💙💔

He was a much-loved husband, dad and friend to many.

Paul had organised Skipton Clogfest for many years and was also the founder and leader of the Keighley Road Jolly Wassailers
who sang Christmas songs in the pubs around Skipton.

Paul and his wife, Barbara also worked on songs about May Day and May time as well; material that was taken out into the streets and to folk festivals.

The The Jolly Wassailers performed 🎭 some wonderful music 🎶 and songs which gave such a warming and positive funeral vibe.
The atmosphere was really great and positive with plenty of smiles and laughter. There was a song as mentioned before about May Day which seemed so apt for the time of year.

The glorious weather provided the perfect 'stage' for everyone who performed at their very best.
We will include some video footage of the special musical contributions.

The main graveside service was beautifully led by Amanda from Willow Tree Ceremonies 🌳

Tears of sadness were soon tears of happiness as so many warm and happy memories were shared amongst the large gathering of those who love and will miss Paul.

Paul’s unique Jute coffin was laden with blackthorn by his family and his burial plot was lovingly decorated by Suzanne using some gorgeous spring flowers, gathered locally.

The final piece of music that was heard was 'Fantasia on British Sea Songs, Last Night of the Proms - a popular orchestral medley of traditional British maritime songs, designed to honor the centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar.
The most peaceful way to leave Paul to rest in his forever home.

We even managed to capture a kite flying over as the service took place 🖤

Paul’s family then celebrated some more with refreshments at The Craven Heifer Skipton next door where more music and memories were shared ❤️

Special thanks to Suzanne Bairstow Independent Funeral Director and Carl for their services and for putting together such a wonderful goodbye for Paul and his family.
We'd also like to thank Team Blades for their superb grave preparation and to Paul’s family for allowing us to share these photographs.

Donations were kindly collected for Parkinson's UK.
