‼️NEMATODIRUS‼️

We have made a diagnosis of nematodirus in a January born lamb, bought to us for post mortem. The worms were found in a wash of the gut. This is ‘pre-patent’ meaning no eggs were found in the faeces.

Who’s at risk? 🪱
- Lambs that are 6-12 weeks old (they are or are starting to graze)
- Lambs on pasture that had lambs on last year
- Lambs on lower, sheltered ground (warmer), post cold snap
- SCOPs forecast showing both minimal and imminent hatching at closest weather stations

What else?
- Nematodirus causes high number of mortalities (often in fittest lambs) and stunted growth
- Treat with white (BZ-1) drench ensuring calibrated dosing gun, doses to heaviest lamb
- It may be necessary to treat more than once, the drench has no residual action

Lamb losses
- If you are experiencing lamb losses we recommend bringing them down for a post-mortem. There are a number of factors that can cause losses around this age. Ensuring a diagnosis specific to your farm is 🔑
- Ring in to discuss with our vets

The NSA are hosting a webinar to explain the consultation on mandating the animal health and welfare review.

The consultation also includes cattle.

On Wednesday 25th March, NSA is holding a free webinar discussing the current Animal Health and Welfare consultation.

The consultation asks many questions including what this review visit should contain, and questions over data collection.

NSA is encouraging farmers to get their views heard in addition to the NSA responding in our own right.
