Right...How far are we taking this advice? 😂
Ice pack?
Frozen peas?
Full Arctic expedition?

Ice has its place, short term, specific situations, specific injuries.

But pain is rarely that simple.
❌️Not all pain equals inflammation.
❌️Not all injuries need icing.
❌️And no one has ever fixed a long term problem by living next to the freezer.

🖐️ “You’ve got Mr Miyagi Hands" But why? Can you work out the answer? 🖐

Words every practitioner smiles at. But this case was more interesting than that. Being told you completed magic feels good, but really, we just do our job!

A mid-30s female police officer came into clinic yesterday, after a fall around four weeks ago. During the fall she injured her right hand and finger.
✔️X-rays done.
✔️Medical assessment done.
😞Conclusion, soft tissue injury, rest it and let it settle.

She did exactly what the doctors told her but the pain didn’t settle.
😩Weakness persisted.
😩Movement reduced.
😩Frustration growing.
😩She couldn’t fully curl her first finger.
😩She couldn’t bring it down to the base of the thumb.
😩Grip was weak.
😩And crucially, it was starting to affect her job.

Having been to clinic previously, she knew something wasn’t right and booked in.

The assessment had to start with the history. Ideally, knowing how she landed or how the finger moved during the fall would have given clues to the mechanism. Unfortunately, she couldn’t recall that detail. So instead, we went full detective mode.

💪 Muscle function and strength
⚡ Sensation and neural input

The finger was significantly weak. She could only curl it about 50 percent. She couldn’t touch the base of the thumb. She couldn’t hold or squeeze an object under that finger.

Scott knew what was happening! New where to go next.
So then came treatment.

And here’s the cool and interesting bit.
After around 20 minutes, she could
✔️ Fully curl the finger
✔️ Touch the base of the thumb
✔️ Squeeze and grip objects
✔️ Move the finger freely again
Things that were impossible 20 minutes earlier.
So here’s the question...
