If you didn't know the transnational educational policies of the US have changed, especially towards China. Where I work is a joint programme between my local university law school in China and the University of Arizona. Due to the new policies set by a select committee of Congress in the US, the University of Arizona, literally overnight, removed themselves from any educational activities in China. This was due to the US being "very concerned" about "intelligence and skills" being taken by Chinese students to ultimately give China an advantage. Literally overnight, all Arizona professors had to leave, literally ordered that they shouldn't be here. The professors in the US about to return for the new semester were ordered to not return for any further educational involvement. I was lucky, my English programme will continue until January but after that, I have to seek other employment.
The University of Arizona receives a lot of government funding, especially for science and aerospace ... a lot. It was in their interests to not jeopardise this funding, so they immediately pulled out of China. Someone asked me, "Where is the humanity in that?"
The law programme I'm involved with has taken 11 years to build up into what I consider a really great international programme, both economically and academically. Students are now really reaping the rewards and going on to really wonderful things. It's one of the most expensive courses in China, but one of the best.
If this had happened in the UK there would have been riots on the streets.
Love my students, they're such nice young human beings, just starting out y'know. But I think they and the university I'm involved with have been treated extremely unfairly, with total disregard ... This is the Trump administration.
Your man on the ground,
Andy.
