Some people think that a massage is a luxury or something you have when you have hurt yourself. Massage can be both of these things but it can also be an amazing way of preventing injuries, promoting relaxation and helping your body work effectively.
The positive effects of massage build up over time and can have a very real impact on the way we feel, move and deal with life.
I have a regular massage, whether I 'need' it or not because it is such a benefit to my life
Why not see what it could do for you?

I was asked today, what is remedial massage?

Well, it is one of the most effective and readily available ways to deal with muscle injuries, soreness and aches.

Why- because most pain is based in the soft tissue elements of the body and these respond to touch.

Headaches often are the result of the tightness in the neck and shoulder muscles, release the tension and the pain is eased. Similarly, lower back pain is often radiated from the muscles in the hips rather than disc problems.

When you ache, it's more likely to be soft tissue in origin and as such remedial massage can really help

So, as my wife rides a horse and is forever complaining about aching muscles, i thought why not encourage other riders to have a regular massage and look after themselves the way they look after their horses!
There is no doubt that caring for and riding a horse is demanding on the rider’s body. Whether it is mucking out, filling hay nets, moving water or being out and about at whatever level, it has an effect on the body.
This can lead to sore, aching muscles, stiffness and tenderness, even changes to posture and the way we move.
There are a group of 8 key muscles which are used constantly when riding, stabilising the body through the core and allowing the rider to absorb the movement of the horse as well as direct and control it. The constant repetition that these muscles go through mean it is essential to look after them properly if we want to achieve our potential as a rider.
Often the excitement of riding stops us from fully acknowledging the impact or even being aware of significant changes. This can lead to personal injury or impact on the horse as the way we sit and move changes, spreading our tensions onto them.
As a remedial masseur I can help riders maintain themselves through stretching and working the muscles to alleviate tiredness and aching.
Through massage I can promote the conditioning of key muscles, deal with the aches and pains that we have put up with over time, improve core stability and balance to enable the rider to perform at their best and prevent injuries occurring.
Regular massage can increase the flexibility in muscles and the range of movement in joints enabling the rider to be more in harmony with their horse and to enjoy their riding even more.
My sessions are tailored to each individual client addressing their needs and consists of a consultation and agreed treatment.
An introductory session costs just £25, regular sessions are £35 - so why not get in contact and enjoy a better riding experience?

If you are enjoying being more out and about, more active with the lighter nights, warmer days etc, why not book a massage to ease those muscles that may be being used more than normal?
Get in touch and feel amazing!

Most athletes can testify to the pain-relieving, recovery-promoting effects of massage. Now there’s a scientific basis that supports booking a session with a massage therapist: On the cellular level massage reduces inflammation and promotes the growth of new mitochondria in skeletal muscle. The research, involving scientists from the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario appears in the February 1st online edition of Science Translational Medicine.
The study involved the genetic analysis of muscle biopsies taken from the quadriceps of eleven young males after they had exercised to exhaustion on a stationary bicycle. One of their legs was randomly chosen to be massaged. Biopsies were taken from both legs prior to the exercise, immediately after 10 minutes of massage treatment and after a 2.5 hour period of recovery.

Buck Institute faculty Simon Melov, PhD, was responsible for the genetic analysis of the tissue samples. “Our research showed that massage dampened the expression of inflammatory cytokines in the muscle cells and promoted biogenesis of mitochondria, which are the energy-producing units in the cells,” said Melov. He added that the pain reduction associated with massage may involve the same mechanism as those targeted by conventional anti-inflammatory drugs. “There’s general agreement that massage feels good, now we have a scientific basis for the experience,” said Melov.

Study participants were recruited at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Lead author Mark Tarnopolsky, MD, PhD, from the Department of Pediatrics and Medicine said the research provides much needed validation for a practice that is growing in popularity. “The potential benefits of massage could be useful to a broad spectrum of individuals including the elderly, those suffering from musculoskeletal injuries and patients with chronic inflammatory disease,” said Tarnopolsky. “This study provides evidence that manipulative therapies, such as massage, may be justifiable in medical practice.”

About 18 million individuals undergo massage therapy annually in the U.S., making it the fifth most widely used form of complementary and alternative medicine. Despite several reports that long-term massage therapy reduces chronic pain and improves range of motion in clinical trials, the biological effects of massage on skeletal tissue have remained unclear.
