Trauma doesn’t always look the way people expect it to.
It’s not just what happened — it’s how the mind and body learned to adapt in order to survive.
Sometimes trauma looks like anxiety, always being on edge or unable to relax.
Sometimes it looks like emotional numbness, feeling disconnected or “flat.”
It can show up as overthinking, people-pleasing, avoiding situations, or struggling to trust others.
For some, it’s being constantly busy to avoid feeling.
For others, it’s feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unable to move forward.
What we often label as “difficult behaviour” or “self-sabotage” is, in many cases, protection.
These responses made sense at the time. They served a purpose.
But healing is about gently helping the mind and body realise that the danger has passed — and that new ways of coping are possible.
If this resonates, you’re not alone — and support is available.
At BrainMatters Counselling, we offer a safe, compassionate space to explore your experiences at your own pace.
