Here is an infographic displaying what children’s injuries I have treated from January to March. How are we past Easter already..

Below is some information regarding some issues I have come across both online and in person.
They age from 8-16
6 Severs Disease - Slight decrease in heel issues over the winter.
2 Ankle/foot non severs
10 Knee issues - mainly Osgoods & ACL injuries. ACL injuries were all female.
1 Hamstring
5 Hip issue/groin
3 Calf issues
1 Concussion’s
2 Back issues
2 Upper back or neck related
1 Shoulder issues

31 out of 33 play some form of sport, or have a hobby leading to their injury. Predominantly football. But it also includes swimming, athletics, tennis, rugby, playing a musical instrument and gymnastics.

The majority play football.

6/6 with severs are boys
An increase this time with boys with Osgoods.
Over half the girls I have seen have knee issues! And many others had quad/thigh problems.
I have been putting these infographics together for several years based on what I see in the clinic.

Would you like me to put together any information on specific injuries?

Many of these issues can be prevented, or even the severity reduced with the right advice, load management and training. If your child is currently suffering from pain or an injury please get in touch. I can help you!

You don’t have to be injured to see a sports therapist.

That’s probably the biggest misconception about what I do.

Assessment, prehab, strength work to build resilience, screening your movement before problems develop - that’s as much a part of my job as treating injuries.

Same goes for post-event recovery after a race or heavy training block. Returning to sport after a break. Or coming back to running after shin splints kept stopping you - and this time actually getting to the bottom of why.

You don’t wait until your car breaks down to service it. Your body is no different.

If you’ve always thought of sports therapy as a last resort, this is your reminder it doesn’t have to be.

Here’s every body part I’ve treated this month, by percentage.

Knee at the top. Ankle, foot and calf close behind. Lower back making its usual appearance.

No huge surprises, but the Cambridge Half Marathon and London HYROX have almost certainly played a part in the numbers this month. Race prep, race day effort, and the aftermath all have a way of showing up in the diary shortly after.

Running has exploded in popularity over the last few years. It’s the one activity that keeps coming up as what people want to get back to but can’t right now.

If that’s you, this is exactly what I’m here for.

If you’re training hard every single week without a deload, this is for you.

A deload is a planned reduction in training intensity or volume. Not a week off. Not a sign you’re going soft. A deliberate part of the process.

Recovery is vital to your gains and fitness. Training is just the stimulus.

Signs you probably need one:
-> Performance has stalled or gone backwards
-> Tired even after a full night’s sleep
-> Motivation has dropped off
-> Niggles that just won’t shift

One structured recovery week can be the difference between consistent progress and a setback that costs you months.

Train smart. Not just hard.

Any questions about recovery or deloading? Drop them below, or send me a message šŸ’ŖšŸ¼

HYROX 10 for me. HYROX 1 for Emma. šŸ’Ŗ

Mixed Doubles at the EMEA Championships and I can confirm the marriage is still intact. Just about. šŸ˜‚

Watching Emma take on her first ever Hyrox while Mollie and Max cheered us on from the sidelines was something I will not forget in a hurry.

Proud does not even cover it.

If you have been putting off doing something that scares you, let this be your sign.

Show up. Back yourself. The experience is always worth it.

Drop a comment below if you have done a Hyrox. Ever done one with your partner?

Some simple tips for your average person doing their first HYROX.

Everyone over complicates it like we are professional athletes. When most of us just want to get through it 😜

Last tip is the most important of all šŸ™ŒšŸ»

Huge well done to Ella.

A few weeks before the Cambridge Half Marathon she could barely run past 2km because of knee pain.

Fast forward to race day…

She completed the entire Cambridge Half Marathon, set a personal best, and raised a huge amount of money for a charity close to her heart.

That takes determination and a never give up attitude!

A brilliant effort from a really determined young lady. Hopefully this inspires other young people to stay focused and keep going when things get tough.

If you would like to support Ella’s fundraising, you can donate via the link in the comments šŸ™ŒšŸ»
