We all like our home to smell nice, especially at Christmas time when you might have more family and friends over than usual.
But our conventional scented home products like diffusers and plug ins have some real nasties lurking in them, making your indoor air quality pretty bad. You wouldn’t necessarily realise as they are masked by ‘nice fragrances’.
A study into Indoor VOCs from Scented Products (Volatile Organic Compounds - PMID 21196139) found that the tested 25 products including air fresheners, deodorants, laundry detergent, soaps and disinfectants contained more than 130 toxic products. Some of those were classified as toxic or hazardous by the government and only 1 was listed on any label!! 😧😧😧
Half of the 25 products generated at least 1 of 24 carcinogenic (cancer causing) hazardous air pollutants, such as acetaldehyde, 1,4-dioxane, formaldehyde, or methylene chloride. These hazardous air pollutants have no safe exposure level, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
This is just 1 study and there are many more.
Simmer Pots are a great way to bring REAL seasonal scents into your home and they’re very easy to do. You can use a small pan on the hob or even the slow cooker and add in whatever you fancy. Some combinations of these work really well.
🫐 Cranberries
🍊 Orange Slices
🫚 Ginger, Cinnamon and Cloves
🌲 Pine leaves
🍎 Apple
☕️ Coffee
You can leave this simmering on low all day or just take off the lid and leave the pot to cool somewhere once boiled well. Ground coffee in an open dish also has a beautiful scent. Why not hide one round the house and see who notices 😆
