Monday’s Westminster Hall debate, calling for evacuation chairs in all schools and colleges, marks an important step in recognising the safety needs of disabled pupils and staff.

A huge congratulations to Lucas Vezza O’Brien, whose dedicated campaigning brought this issue to Parliament. No one should ever be left behind in an emergency - safe, dignified evacuation must be a core part of every education setting’s duty of care.

Whilst the Government has not yet committed to mandating evacuation chairs, the debate made one thing clear: current approaches are inconsistent and more must be done to ensure every school can evacuate everyone, every time.

The devastating fire at Hong Kong’s Wang F*k Court is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly lives can be lost when fire safety systems and oversight fail. With at least 151 confirmed dead and many still missing, our thoughts are with all those affected.

Early findings point to serious failures, reinforcing one clear truth: safe evacuation must work for everyone.

Fire safety isn’t just about alarms and exits - it’s about planning for every individual, including people with reduced mobility or additional needs. No one should ever be left behind.

We stand with those calling for stronger oversight, clearer standards and a renewed focus on inclusive evacuation planning. Lives depend on it.

🚨 Big news! On 1st December, Parliament will debate the campaign. We are delighted to see this critical issue receiving the attention it so clearly deserves.

Earlier this year, Lucas Vezza-O'Brien, a remarkable young student with cerebral palsy, was left in a refuge during a school fire. He is now leading a nationwide campaign for safer, fully accessible school evacuations and we are proud to support his efforts.

This parliamentary debate could be a turning point, ensuring that every student can evacuate safely, without exception.
