Hi everyone! It's another long overdue update on what the EFT team have been up to! They have been very busy helping and supporting both private clients and organisations with a range of mental health issues.
It has been lovely to see more and more adults reaching out to explore if this type of therapy would work for them (I know from my photos it looks like it's more for children, which couldn't be farther from the truth!).
When I have clients who enquire whether this type of therapy would work for them due to them having never been around horses before or are worried about feeling nervous, I think this type of therapy would be a great option!
The reason for this is if the nervous system is already active, it gives us a great opportunity to work with this and learn how to regulate in the present.
What better way to learn how to calm and change how we hold that nervous energy than to have it modelled and worked with directly in the moment!
Clients then have tangible tools they can use outside of sessions.
Another question I get asked a lot is - how does Equine Facilitated Therapy work? The way I work is I use psychoeducation to help people to understand what is going on for them.
However, what I feel sets Equine Facilitated Therapy apart from some conventional talk based therapies, is it helps people to focus more on what is happening in the body.
For example, if we look at trauma and anxiety, both of these are very physical responses that happen in the body. So even though I will educate about trauma and anxiety, I often find it can't be soothed by looking at it purely from a logical/analytical place - it has to be felt!
It's about sitting with and holding space for the most wounded parts of ourselves in an open, non judgemental, curious and compassionate way.
In order to self regulate, we must learn to first co-regulate, this is where the horses and their energy comes in.
They evoke, respond and hold space for the various physical and emotional responses that arise within clients during sessions.
There is also a range of research that illustrates how being around horses/animals and being in the outdoors has a positive impact on a person's mental health and wellbeing. Both of these factors are naturally incorporated into sessions.
From my personal experience, I have found that through pairing Equine Facilitated Therapy alongside counselling has had the biggest impact for change for people. Feedback has consisted of the surprise of what comes up for them during sessions as they work to build a better and more calming relationship internally.
I could easily write an essay about the benefits, how and why it works as I feel so passionate about this type of therapy but if you would like to learn more, feel free to reach out through the following:
