I keep waiting for my bump 'pop'! I'm lucky & am enormously grateful for my extra long body - so much length for baby to stretch out in meaning I can still see my feet, sort my shoe laces easily etc.

This pregnancy I have been so fortunate. I've not struggled with indigestion (yet), and my hips have been so much better (chiropractor). However, I have had horrendous mouth ulcers (who knew this could be a pregnancy ailment)!?

Yes, the physical symptoms of this pregnancy have made me feel so different to my previous 2. But I also feel different emotionally. I think the main reason for this is the pandemic & the general undertones of stress/anxiety that go with it.

To all the people that have been pregnant and had babies during this pandemic. You are amazing!

If you want to know more about the range of topics my hypnobirthing classes cover join me this Thursday for my final free taster session before I finish for maternity leave in May. Send me a DM for details - I still have a couple of spaces left.

Today is .

Whoever coined the phrase 'I slept like a baby' needs a serious talking to!

All babies sleep is differently.

Some people get a baby that sleeps through at 3months, and then age three turns into a nighttime party animal.

Others sleep through around 12months & then suffer from every sleep regression possible,

Others don't sleep through until they are 6 or 7.

Some are early risers, some are night owls.

I for one wasn't prepared for the 3 x 20min cap naps of my first born...until she was 6months old....'sleep when they sleep' as if that's possible when you get three short 20min intervals a day! I suffered...I hadn't considered how difficult sleep deprivation could be.

I am a huge advocate of birth preparation, but this is just the start of the journey. In my birth classes we talk about preparing for the post natal period & why this is equally important (and often overlooked).

I urge anyone that attends my classes to create a post natal plan. Talk about the important things - not the colour of the nursery wall, but who's going to do the washing, cook the meals, tag team the sleep, look after other children, relieve the 'mum guilt'.

I have a free 1hr antenatal hypnobirthing taster coming up on 18th March. If you'd like to join send me a DM. It'd be lovely to have you there!

What better way to celebrate International Women's Day than with the beautiful birth story.

Mum - Thank you for sharing this wonderful story with us!

I must admit prior to the hypnobirthing course I was feeling scared, nervous and out of control. Afterwards I was happier, more prepared and very excited about what was to come.

It was a last-minute decision of mine to not go into hospital to give birth, I decided on a home, water birth instead as my husband had been unwell and this way he could be with me throughout. So, the lounge it was!

I was offered a sweep on two occasions, but I politely declined as other than feeling a little uncomfortable physically I was very prepared mentally. My Sainsbury’s delivery had just arrived when things started to happen!

My husband was my birth partner, and he was amazing, as he had been when I birthed our first child. He remained calm throughout, set up the entire birthing area and pool perfectly and was encouraging the whole time. Reminding me of my strength and counting through surges.

By early evening my surges had really started but I was consumed with the normal bedtime routine for my three year old, therefore distracted and the surges came and went fairly easily. After my daughter had gone to bed, I had a relaxing bath then watched the finale for The Great British Bake-Off with my husband while sat on my pregnancy ball. We ended up getting to bed fairly late, which I later regretted!

Once I went to bed and laid down the surges became more intense and my husband recognised the change in my behaviour and called the midwife and my sister to pick up our daughter. To help me get through the surges, I used the breathing techniques Hannah had taught me.

Once the first midwife arrived at our home, I felt happy. She was hands off and we just had a chat. I felt the entire way through my pregnancy and labour, that all the midwives really respected my preferences. The birthing pool was great in helping to soothe me, I did try gas and air, but I felt it didn’t help and so after a couple of mins left it.

Throughout the entire labour the midwives didn’t examine me at all. Towards the point when the baby was ready to make his entrance, I experienced the feeling that I couldn’t go on. I felt immense pressure, and this caused me to feel the need to ROAR when getting through surges. I was so aware of my muscles remaining relaxed throughout all of this and I focused on not bearing down, no matter how much I felt I wanted to.

The affirmations were playing continuously on my phone through all of my active labour.

Upon meeting our baby boy for the first time, I was elated and so relived! I felt proud of myself and my husband who I couldn’t have done it without! I held our baby as my husband cut the cord quickly due to the fact it went white quite soon. We noticed there was a knot in the umbilical cord, a true knot as it’s known.

My husband had skin to skin with the baby as I climbed out of the pool and was assisted by the midwives to deliver my placenta and then our baby boy was handed to me, it was magical.

I would 100% recommend Hannah our instructor. She helped me remember the power and focus I needed to have a positive labour and birth experience during such a crazy time in the world. She led the course with enthusiasm and was so informative. Hannah armed me and my husband with the knowledge and practical techniques we needed.

This is me at my 28week midwife appointment.

I was expecting to be there a max of 30mins. How wrong could I be. I ended up having the full works. The usual...

PLUS...

Monitoring
Urgent growth scan

2.5hours later I walked out. How did I feel?

⭐ UNBELIEVEABLE GRATEFUL⭐

Why?

Because I know my stuff. I knew:

💪How to ask meaningful questions and probe if I didn't understand the answer.

💪I had choices, and that I can decline at any point.

💪That just because today I was having a growth scan didn't mean I would 'have to' in 2 weeks time.

💪Even though I could have felt like a patient. I didn't. Pregnancy makes me tired, a little angry (a points), and constipated (AHHHH), but it doesn't make make me a patient. Pregnancy isn't an illness.

I couldn't help but listen to the conversations going on around me & feel sad for those that haven't prepared for all scenarios. So much language used that is medicalised, so many missed opportunities to make informed decisions, so many people following advice without truly understanding it.

Often (as I did) we choose to follow the course of action recommended by our professional care providers. However, there is stark difference between following it because we understand it and know what the implications may be, and following it simply because that's what the experts say.

As my midwife said to me yesterday 'You are the expert in your body, and that provides an important piece in the jigsaw puzzle.' I'm grateful I have a midwife that listened to my concerns and worked with me.

If you want to know more about the antenatal techniques I teach and how they can help you please send me a DM.

Last week I talked about the Fear=Tension=Pain cycle.

I thought I'd fill you in on what I've learnt about fear of birth.

In my taster sessions, and during Class 1 of my full hypnobirthing course I try to get people to open up around their fear of birth. People range from:

COMPLETE FEAR - fear of blood, fear of needles, fear of pain, fear of hospitals, fear of losing one's dignity, fear of tearing, fear of death....

UNDERLYING UNEASE - Not able to pinpoint a specific fear, but think they should have fear, but can't figure out if they do or in fact why they do.

People find hypnobirthing for all the above reasons and more. Some are first time parents, some second time, others third, fourth etc. Some have had previous positive experiences but believe it was fluke, others negative and want to do whatever it takes to have a positive subsequent birth.

Sadly a huge number of people don't overcome their fears, aren't able to acknowledge they have them, are willing to take the risk and just 'wing it'.

There is a high chance of entering the Fear=Tension=Pain cycle if you don't process your fears, if you don't work to overcome them, if you don't acknowledge them. It's simple science - the power of the mind body connection & our innate mechanisms for survival.

Please get in touch if you want to know more or hear about my next Free Taster session.

03/03/2021

Today is World Wildlife Day, and while I accept hamsters aren't the most interesting form of wildlife this little creature will help to demonstrate my point.

When I'm explaining how the human brain affects how we birth I often ask my clients if they have ever seen an animal give birth. Usually we end up talking about the latest David Attenborough. The most abstract example I've had so far is a families pet hamster.

As a child my client had a pregnant pet hamster. They put a toilet roll filled with wood shavings into its hutch to provide a cosy spot for the hamster....so where did the hamster have her young?

Within the toilet roll. It was warm, dark, safe, and she was completely unobserved.

We as humans aren't different in what we need to help the natural process of birth (and the natural hormones). So I ask, has anyone ever been to a hospital and felt it was warm (usually its hot), dark (ohhh the strip lights), and unobserved (hustle and bustle spring to mind)!

In my hypnobirthing classes I teach why these things are so important, and also how to acheive these things in any environment. After-all whatever birth we have getting the environment right can really help boost the natural hormones to assist birth.

If you want to know more about why we need these things for birth join me on my next FREE taster session.

We made it! It's finally spring. Thank Goodness Right!?!

I have a few clients who are due this month.

Who's found out they are expecting?

Who has left it this long in their pregnancy and wants to take some decisive action to prepare for their birth?

DM me to join my last Hypnobirthing course at the end of this month before I go off on maternity leave.
