Carpal tunnel syndrome often begins with symptoms which are easy to dismiss, such as numbness, tingling, nighttime discomfort, or a weaker grip. Recognising these early signs is important, as timely assessment can help identify the cause and guide the most appropriate treatment.

At The Birmingham Upper Limb Clinic, Mr Pantelis Tsantanis provides expert assessment and personalised treatment for hand and wrist conditions, helping patients understand their symptoms and explore the most suitable management options for their daily life and long-term function.

Our clinics are held at:
* Optimised Care – Bromsgrove Hospital (Bromsgrove)
* Midlands Ultrasound & Medical Services (MUMS) – Solihull

From the Friday’s operating theatre to the touchline.

Sunday’s clinic looked a little different – covering the vs game in the rain. Different setting, same priority: keeping players safe and managing injuries when they happen.

As someone who spends much of their time treating upper limb injuries in hospital, it’s always rewarding to apply that expertise pitchside where quick decisions matter and safety comes first.

Grateful as well to be supported on the day by the brilliant female physio colleagues – a fitting reminder, especially on , of the incredible women working across sport and healthcare.

Questions, answered.

Q: why is an upper limb specialist input helpful?

A: Shoulder, elbow and hand problems can be complex and their symptoms may overlap. Specialist assessment may pinpoint the true source of pain and avoid unsuccessful treatments.

At The Birmingham Upper Limb Clinic, we focus on clear diagnosis and a personalised plan, so you move forward with confidence.

AC joint separation (or dislocation) is a common shoulder injury after a fall or direct impact, especially in contact sports and cycling.
Typical signs and symptoms include pain on the top of the shoulder, swelling, limited movement, and sometimes a visible “bump”.

The good news: Many cases improve with the right non-operative plan (support + rehab), while higher-grade injuries may need a specialist assessment and consideration of surgical treatment.

If you’ve had a recent shoulder injury and you’re unsure what’s going on, we can help you get clarity and a personalised treatment plan.

Our clinics are held at:
* Optimised Care – Bromsgrove Hospital (Bromsgrove)
* Midlands Ultrasound & Medical Services (MUMS) – Solihull

Shoulder instability often starts with a first dislocation, but it doesn’t always feel dramatic. For many people it’s a repeated “slip”, apprehension in certain positions, or a shoulder that simply doesn’t feel secure.

Stability depends on the labrum, capsule/ligaments, rotator cuff, and shoulder blade control. When these are injured or too lax, the risk of recurrent episodes increases.

Most patients improve with a structured rehab programme focused on control and stabilisation. If instability persists, or there’s significant tissue/bone damage, surgical stabilisation may be the safest route back to confidence and function.

Shoulder pain is often dismissed as “just a strain” but persistent symptoms may indicate an underlying condition that deserves specialist assessment.

Night pain, weakness, and limited movement are important red flags that shouldn’t be ignored.

Early evaluation can prevent prolonged discomfort and lead to more effective treatment.

If your shoulder pain hasn’t improved, it may be time to seek expert advice.

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a condition that causes pain, stiffness, and restricted movement of the shoulder.

It develops gradually, often following injury, surgery, or prolonged immobilisation, and progresses through three stages: freezing, frozen, and thawing.
While recovery can take time, the right diagnosis and a structured treatment plan can significantly improve comfort and mobility.

Treatment focuses on pain management, physiotherapy, and guided exercises, helping the shoulder regain movement progressively and safely.
