Our safe water projects with water in Western Zambia have restored 520 handpumps, bringing clean water to over 90,000 people! 💧

As part of the project, partner delivers Environmental Health and Sanitation Sessions to teach communities sustainable ways to protect vital native trees like the Mongongo, providing food security in times of drought.🌳

In the Nalitoya Village of the Naolol District, communities are also investing funds from the project on goats, a highly climate-change resilient livestock, which provide rich nutrition and boost livelihoods. 🐐🥛

👋 It's been a while - over the last couple of months we've been reflecting on last year's successes - and its challenges.

In 2024, we continued to deliver credible and verified climate projects with our Safe Water & Clean Cookstove Projects across Africa. Our work in Mozambique, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Rwanda, especially, has significantly reduced carbon emissions while contributing to UN SDG targets 🌍🌱

👥 789,000 carbon credits issued in Mozambique - equivalent to the emissions of 140,000 people in the UK! - (Our World In Data)

💧 Borehole rehabilitation & improved cookstoves are cutting emissions while providing safe water & cleaner air.

🌍 This week, we’re showcasing our projects in West Africa, where we have projects in Burkina Faso, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Togo. 🌍

We’re particularly proud of our work in Burkina Faso. The ongoing security, and humanitarian crisis has resulted in 2 million internally displaced individuals, which lack access to safe water. Our water projects in Burkina Faso will provide 53,415 people with access to safe and clean water.💧

Over the past year in The Gambia, we successfully rehabilitated four solar pumps and are eager to see this project grow! These pumps save time and effort by utilising solar energy to fill storage tanks, eliminating manual water extraction. 🌤️

In the Easten Province of Sierra Leone, prior to our project 98% of household relied on unsafe water sources. Since 2019, we’ve partnered with -SL to rehabilitate 132 boreholes, providing safe water to over 35,000 people.

As part of our Togo Safe Water Project, a „Mother Club“ was established, empowering communities through WASH trainings to learn about effective sanitation and hygiene practices. As part of this we introduced sexual health awareness training, to safeguard individuals whilst respecting the local socio-cultural context. They are committed to spreading this valuable knowledge within their communities.✨

🌍 Updates from COP29 in Baku! 🌍

A few weeks ago, our team members Alex and Mark attended in Baku! They had a productive week, reconnecting with clients, attending 25th anniversary event, dining with and Climate Door and meeting diverse project developers.

Additionally, our colleague Serena participated in the panel discussion “Navigating Article 6: Opportunities and Challenges in International Carbon Markets”, joined by specialists such as International Policy Advisor and Head of Policy and Markets.

While this year’s COP faced its share of criticisms, particularly regarding the lack of clear commitments to transitioning away from fossil fuels, the need for global climate action was evident:

🌱 An ce for developing nations by 2035, focusing on adaptation, mitigation, and addressing loss and damage -

💰 Mechanisms for operating carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement were agreed, creating a centralised system to fund climate projects in low-income regions while incorporating safeguards to protect Indigenous Peoples' rights -

📊 Enhanced transparency measures will improve climate reporting and accountability -

Between January and November 2024, our team in Northern Uganda has reached over 200,000 community members with Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) training conducted as part of our Northern Uganda Safe Water project. By rehabilitating 800 boreholes and conducting hands-on training, we’re empowering communities with essential skills and helping to secure long-term access to clean, safe water! 🚰✨

Here’s how this project does it:

✅ Safe Water Collection: Training on collecting water with clean, sealed containers to prevent contamination.

✅ Hygienic Storage at Home: Emphasising proper cleaning and sealing of jerrycans to keep water safe.

✅ Maintenance Skills: Teaching community members basic borehole upkeep, empowering them to keep their water sources functional.

🌍✨ Exciting news from Guatemala! ✨🌍

We’re thrilled to share that our partnership with is making a real difference to communities in Guatemala through our Improved Cookstove Project! 🚀

Over 8,000 clean cookstoves already in use, we’re reducing firewood consumption, cutting harmful emissions, and providing 3-year warranties to users, thanks to carbon financing. This project is also contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1, 3, 7, and 13) while improving the lives of rural communities. ♻️

Over the next few days, Alex and Mark will be engaging with global leaders, innovators, and change-makers to discuss sustainable development strategies.

One of the key themes of this year’s COP is climate finance—specifically advancing the carbon market mechanism and implementing Article 6 framework. We’re committed to exploring how market-based solutions can drive climate action by enabling countries to meet their emissions reduction targets through verified carbon credit mechanisms.

As we engage in these critical discussions, our team in Baku is focused on building connections with stakeholders who are equally committed to advancing credible carbon projects. With extensive experience in developing Gold Standard-certified projects, we look forward to sharing our insights, making connections, and contributing our expertise to help shape scalable climate solutions. 🌿💡

We recently reached a huge milestone for CO2balance’s Improved Cookstove Project in Rwanda 🌍

Thanks to the distribution of 49,722 improved cookstoves, we’ve helped avoid 163,563 tonnes of CO2e - the same as the annual emissions of 34,800 people in the UK. 🔥

Before the project, communities relied on three-stone open fires, leading to high emissions and multiple health risks. The project has implemented improved cook stoves which not only use less fuel and reduce pollution, but lead to a 37% reduction in time spent by women, who traditionally spent hours cooking and collecting firewood. This initiative supports SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality)!

We’re proud to partner with to issue credits for the Amhara Safe Water project, bringing clean water to a conflict-affected area in Northern Ethiopia. Despite challenges from the regional conflict, Vita’s local team has improved access to safe water for 16,451 people and met the requirements for Certification, preventing 21,934 tCO2 emissions.

Our colleagues Stephen and Johanna recently spent two weeks in Kenya, visiting our Safe Water projects in collaboration with our partners and Griot 💧

From boreholes audits with Griot to inspecting GivePower’s Solar Water Farms, they got to see firsthand how access to clean water is changing lives. Receiving direct feedback from the communities has improved their understanding of the projects and will aid in future developments. Since 2019, the Griot projects have rehabilitated a total of 421 boreholes. 💙
