Some helpful tips when trying to relax, just makes you anxious 😬
Many people with AuDHD (Autism + ADHD) report that unstructured rest doesn’t feel relaxing. A common pattern, especially in the afternoon is feeling:
✨Physically restless
✨Mentally unsettled
✨Unsure what to do and searching for something to do
✨Tired but unable to fully rest
✨Pressured to be productive
✨Guilt for Resting
✨Internal Hyperactivity
This happens because ADHD seeks stimulation, while Autism prefers predictability and structure. When both are missing, downtime can feel uncomfortable rather than restorative and anxiety can actually feel more intense - resulting in increased internal hyperactivity.
Practical ways to support your brain during unstructured time:
✔️ Use “engaged rest” instead of passive rest
Choose low-demand, mildly stimulating activities such as colouring, sorting items, organising playlists, or doing simple puzzles. These offer enough engagement for ADHD while staying predictable enough for Autism.
✔️ Add light structure to downtime
Try short time blocks (10–20 minutes) with a small menu of options for downtime. This gives your brain clarity without feeling rigid.
✔️ Include sensory regulation
Weighted blankets, heat packs, soft lighting, or background noise (white/brown noise) can reduce internal restlessness, especially paired with calm tasks like watching TV, playing video games.
✔️ Try movement before stillness
A short walk, stretching, dancing, tidying up or pacing for 1–2 minutes can help settle the body so resting becomes easier for short periods.
(My personal preference - tidying or dancing for a few minutes to boost dopamine, using my weighted teddy and rocking to calm my nervous system, followed by a wordsearch book or creating content with a reality show on TV. This provides me movement, a transition to slow down and a low-demand, mildly stimulating activity that I enjoy but does not cause further overwhelm, In fact, its what I'm doing now! 😂)
If downtime feels uncomfortable for you, it’s a typical experience within the AuDHD profile not something unusual or wrong, it is neurological and can be very uncomfortable! It can take time to find your sweet spot of what helps you transition from tasks to rest, down regulate and decompress so you can actually use rest to relax.
