⭐️ OLECRANON BURSITIS ⭐️
💪 The Olecranon Bursa is a fluid-filled sac found at the bony tip of the elbow (the olecranon)
🦴 We have many bursa in our body, & their main function is to act as a cushion between bones & soft tissues
😣 If the bursa becomes inflamed then excess fluid will accumulate & can cause bursitis
💥 Symptoms include pain, heat around the area, & a pocket of swelling over the Olecranon
❓ Causes include: trauma, infection & prolonged resting on the elbow (Student’s elbow). Those with Rheumatoid Arthritis & Gout may be more susceptible to bursitis also
👍 Treatment includes anti-inflammatories, activity modification, & symptoms usually settle in 4-6 weeks

⭐️ DISC HERNIATION ⭐️
💥 This refers to when the rubbery cushion of tissue between the bones of your spine called a disc, pushes out & can press on a nerve
😖 This most commonly occurs in the lower back but can also occur in the neck. Most herniated discs resolve gradually with activity modification, gentle exercise & pain relief
🤧 Symptoms can include: sharp/shooting pain in the back/neck, numbness/pins & needles of your arms/hands or legs/feet, muscle weakness and pain on coughing & sneezing
🚬 Risk factors include older age, occupation, obesity, activities with repetitive lifting/twisting, smoking
⚠️ Where your spinal cord ends it runs into a long group of nerves called the Cauda Equina. It is very rare, but a herniated disc can compress on these nerves which could require emergency surgery. See our previous post on Cauda Equina & the signs to look out for!
🤚 Physiotherapy can be very helpful in treating disc herniation by means of activity modification, specific exercises & manuals therapy where required

.
⭐️ FROZEN SHOULDER SYNDROME ⭐️
😖 A frozen shoulder is the gradual onset of shoulder stiffness & pain, which usually interrupts sleep
❔The exact cause is unknown but it is thought there is chronic inflammation that results in stiffness of the shoulder joint capsule.
🧊 Literature varies, but it is thought a true frozen shoulder goes through 3 phases. It almost always spontaneously resolves but can take a few years to do so
🤔 Interestingly, muscle guarding & psychological factors can mimic a frozen shoulder
⚠️ Risk factors include diabetes, trauma, recent fracture, being over 50, thyroid problems & heart disease
🤚 Rehabilitation is aimed at reducing pain, increasing function, restoring movement & strength. This can be achieved by exercise, manual therapy & sometimes acupuncture
💉 In some cases patients require a pain relieving steroid injection into the shoulder, or a hydrodistension injection to try & stretch the joint capsule. Less commonly, patients require surgery to stretch the shoulder whilst under anaesthetic

⭐️ SCOLIOSIS ⭐️
🦴 Scoliosis is a curvature & twisting of the spine that can pull the rib cage out of position. It can be painful or asymptomatic, vary in severity & can affect any part of the spine
🧒 It can affect anyone of any age but is most commonly seen in children around 10-15 years old, & is most commonly idiopathic (cause unknown)
❓ Signs of scoliosis include:
👉 Visibly curved spine
👉 Leaning to 1 side
👉 Uneven shoulders
👉 1 shoulder, hip or ribs sticking out
🤔 There are a number of types of scoliosis including idiopathic, congenital, early onset, adolescent idiopathic, degenerative & neuromuscular
🏥 Treatment for scoliosis varies for a number of reasons such as age, curve severity & if it is likely to worsen with time. Treatment may include Physiotherapy, a brace or support, spinal injections, & in some cases surgery. Particularly in small children it is common to wait & see if the curvature corrects naturally as they grow
⚽️ Mostly patients with scoliosis lead a normal life & partake in most activities & sports

⭐️ WORLD HEALTH DAY 2021 ⭐️
🌎 Today is World Health Day 2021, with this years focus is ‘building a fairer & healthier world’
🦠 This focus has been highlighted by the Covid-19 pandemic as some people live a healthier life with easier access to health services purely due to their age & the conditions in which they are born & live or work
❤️ Health is a state of complete physical, mental & social well-being & not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
🤚 Physiotherapy plays a key role in maintaining people’s health by:
👉 Helping to restore function & mobility
👉Reduce risk of future injury
👉Promoting physical activity
👉Signposting to services e.g dietician, smoking cessation, CBT
👉Sleep hygiene advice
👉Aiding the management of long term conditions e.g diabetes, arthritis, heart & lung disease
👉 Assisting with coping strategies in the management of chronic pain
❔ How has Physiotherapy helped to improve your health?

⭐️ STRESS AWARENESS MONTH 2021 ⭐️
🤯 The aim is to increase awareness of stress, with this year’s focus on ‘Regaining Connectivity, Certainty & Control’. After the last 12 months I think we can all say we have felt disconnected, uncertain & out of control at times!
❤️ Stress is the response to being put in situations that place us under pressure, that if left unaddressed can result in psychological, physiological & behavioural changes. It is a huge health challenge but is often not taken as seriously as physical health problems
😫 Chronic stress can lead to:
👉Anxiety & Depression
👉Cardiovascular disease
👉Immune deficiency
👉 Musculoskeletal disorders
👉Gastrointestinal disorders
👉Insomnia
👉Burnout
👉Poor concentration
🤚 Physiotherapy has a role in aiding stress relief including:
👉 Breathing techniques & relaxation
👉Exercise prescription
👉Sleep hygiene advice
❔Why don’t you try the Stress Management Society’s 30 Day Challenge to see if you can reduce your stress levels with positive behavioural changes?

⭐️ WORLD SLEEP DAY ⭐️
🌍 Today marks World Sleep Day 2021, with the focus this year on ‘regular sleep, healthy future’
😴 Sleep is involved with our memory, inflammation control, hormone regulation, cardiovascular regulation, athletic performance & risk of injury, stress, mood, pain & academic capabilities
🤚 As Physiotherapists we need to be aware of our patient’s quality of sleep as it may be impacting on pain perception, mental health & general health. There is a strong link between pain & sleep deprivation - this impacts on how we assess & treat you
🛌 Sleep Hygiene is key for setting healthy sleep behaviours & providing yourself a good sleep environment. Here are some tips the World Sleep Society recommend to achieve good sleep hygiene:
💤 Set a bedtime & a rise time
💤 Don’t exceed 45 min of daytime naps
💤 Avoid caffeine & alcohol in an evening
💤 Avoid heavy/spicy/sugary foods in an evening
💤 Try to stop smoking
💤 Exercise regularly
💤 Find a comfortable room temperature & keep it well ventilated
💤 Block out distracting noise & eliminate as much light as possible
💤 Avoid screen time when in bed

.
⭐️ BRACHIAL PLEXUS INJURIES ⭐️
💪 The Brachial Plexus is a network of nerves in the shoulder that supplies signals from the spine to the upper limb
💥 Injuries occur when these nerves become compressed, stretched, or in severe cases torn
👨‍⚕️ Injuries are usually due to a trauma - in most cases they gradually resolve but sometimes may require surgery
⚽️ Mild brachial plexus injuries are common in contact sports and often can be referred to as ‘stingers’
🚗 More severe injuries often occur in traumas such as RTA’s & in some cases require surgery to help regain arm function
🏥 Other causes of Brachial Plexus injuries can be caused by tumours, &/or radiotherapy to the chest area.
🔥 Symptoms include: sharp/electric pain, burning sensation, arm/hand weakness &/or numbness
🤚 Nerve tissue takes a long time to grow, therefore recovery time will depend on the severity of the injury. Whilst the nerve recovers, Physiotherapy is vital in maintaining movement and strength of the upper limbs

🦶 The Plantar Fascia is a tight, thick band of tissue that runs from the heel to the forefoot
😖 Symptoms include sharp heel pain which usually is worse first thing in the morning as you get out of bed, or after prolonged standing/walking
🧊 Ice can be helpful in soothing symptoms, along with comfortable, supportive footwear
🤚 At Cave Physiotherapy we can give you tailored exercises & advice to help settle your symptoms including stretches, strengthening exercises, activity modification & advice on footwear

⭐️ FRACTURE MANAGEMENT ⭐️
🦴 A fracture is a break/crack to a bone. There are various types including open, closed, avulsion, stress, comminuted, fracture dislocation, greenstick, hairline, impacted & spiral to name a few!
😖 Fractures usually are traumatic, although if someone has Osteoporosis (low bone density - see prev post) or certain Cancers, then there does not need to be a big trauma to cause the bone to break
🏥 Fractures can be managed conservatively with a cast/sling/boot & allowed to heal themselves over time, or more complex fractures may require surgical intervention
🦵Initial fracture management usually requires the fractured limb to be non-weight bearing to allow healing in the early stages
🥶 Ice & elevation can help with swelling, & it is important to keep the surrounding joints mobile
💪 Guided by your Physiotherapist you can gradually start to increase the range of motion of the fractured limb, working towards weight bearing & strengthening
🤚 At Cave Physiotherapy we can guide you through your fracture management to regain your function
