I’ve talked and worked with many women who are doing everything they can to lower their BMI so they can move forward with fertility treatment

They’re tracking their food, going to the gym, and cutting back on the things they love, yet they feel kinda stuck ... defeated

Like their body just isn’t responding the way it should

💡 But once we dig down into the nitty gritty, what I’ve found over and over again is that it’s not usually a lack of effort

It’s more often the *mindset traps* they’re caught in, the ones no one really talks about in a fertility nutrition context:

🌀 All-or-nothing thinking:
If one meal or workout doesn’t go to plan, the whole day or week feels like a write-off

🥺 Emotional eating:
Food becomes comfort when appointments don’t go well, the pregnancy test is negative, or the seemingly endless wait for help feels heavy

🎯 Perfectionism:
They think they have to get nutrition, movement, rest, life commitments etc right every day for it to count - and when they don’t, it really ramps up the negative self-talk

These patterns aren’t flaws
They’re protective
They do make sense

But they can keep you stuck in cycles that move you away from your goal of reducing your BMI and improving your fertility

Yes, we talk about nutrition and sustainable weight loss, especially if you’re navigating BMI barriers in fertility care

But we also look at your thoughts, beliefs and values
Your relationship with food
Your expectations of yourself
Your self-talk!

Happy Easter 🐰 🐣 to those that celebrate or are using this long weekend to spend with friends and family

If you're worried about overdoing it with food and "treats" this weekend

Know that it's completely normal to feel this way when you have a health and fertility goals

Here are two things I want you to keep in mind:

1️⃣You have permission to enjoy yourself

One day or weekend will not ruin your progress

And you are not bad for eating "bad foods"

🛑Scrap the word "bad" from your vocabulary when you talk about food

2️⃣You are allowed to say no to things that don't serve you

Saying no doesn't make you rude, boring or difficult

‼️Remember you are the only one that knows how important your goals are to you, don't rely on others to pressure you or make decisions for you

Always ask yourself: Does this bring me joy?

If it's a BIG YES, go for it

If it's anything less, don't do/ eat it

I mean the list goes on and on! The reality is that losing weight is so much more complex than it is made out to be

And I hate the fact that we often only blame ourselves for not having enough willpower, motivation or our s**t together to lose the weight

When in reality there’s a myriad of external factors and influences that have led you to this point of being confronted with reducing your BMI to access fertility treatment

“So if it’s not eat less move more, what is it?”

In short, letting go of the shame, building confidence and self-belief that you can make positive changes for yourself, learning to be patient and asking for and accepting help to overcome the barriers, while also learning some useful nutrition stuff

“Ugh that sounds like a lot of work” I hear you say

And the reality is, it kind of is, if you want to get it right!

But it’s work that will have the biggest impact on you, how you show up for yourself, your work, your family and ultimately (fingers, toes everything crossed) for your child

My consultant suggested I do a crash diet 💀 What advice did you get, if any?

While the BMI rule in itself is a problem, even more so is the fact that people often don't receive meaningful support from the local health system to help them lose weight

Or if weight management support is available there are often more barriers that people face, e.g. they don't meet the specific criteria to access the service or the waiting lists are months and years long

Or for those lucky enough to access weight management support for some it isn't adequate for their needs. Lots will be prescribed with weight loss injections, some get access to online programmes like Weight Watchers, and some get a meeting with a dietician to discuss "healthy eating" but really this barely scratches the surface of trying to undo a negative relationship with food, emotional eating, yo-yo dieting or understand how to eat for health, fertility and wellbeing

As frustrating as it sounds, the answer is that you've got to slow it down

You likely have tried to lose weight umpteen times before

Always trying to overhaul your entire lifestyle, the one you have been used to living for years, in a few days

Trying to break all bad habits and build new ones at the same time

And getting burnt out in the process, leading you to give up and feel guilty

How did the scales make you feel this morning?

After a weekend of eating out, enjoying Christmas festivities or drowning your TTC (trying to conceive) worries in Christmas snacks you likely have woken up to see your weight has increased.

And if you're trying to reduce your BMI to finally start IVF, then this has probably sent you into a panic.

And you're now trying to avoid any and all food and only eat twigs and berries before you get so hungry later on that you'll eat everything in sight and just feel crap about it again...

I get it...literally know exactly what it's like to be forced to change your body to get a chance at growing your family

Reducing my BMI was hard work because just like you, I was

‼️ Angry about the BMI rule even existing

‼️ Overwhelmed with how to lose weight and improve fertility

‼️ Frustrated about how every fertility-guru says to do something different

But I'm here to tell you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel

Having made it out the other end and having been particularly lucky with a first successful round of IVF

I'm so grateful to my past self that I recognised that learning to manage my weight is a life skill and that I invested the time and money it took to help me get there
