Please keep sharing and let anyone you know who is on a pre paid meter about this scheme. Thank you.
A new crowdfunding scheme has been set up to help Worthing residents living in fuel poverty this winter.
The Worthing Powerbank is a joint initiative between Huskky Energy, a Worthing-based company that instals solar panels and electric vehicle chargers, Worthing Borough Council and Worthing Food Foundation, a local food bank. The campaign is being led by Cllr Carl Walker, the Deputy Leader of Worthing Borough Council, and Cllr Dale Overton of Gaisford ward.
Energy prices have soared this year, leaving many people unable to pay their bills through no fault of their own. The Worthing Powerbank aims to help those most in need by offering emergency support to those on prepayment meters with money raised from its crowdfunding campaign.
Worthing Food Foundation will use its role in the community to identify people who need support, while Huskky Energy will provide technical expertise and promotional support.
Cllr Carl Walker, the Deputy Leader of Worthing Borough Council, said: “With 12,000 people in Worthing already struggling to access enough food after years of disastrous central government policies, the coming energy price rises combined with soaring inflation will plunge even more households into dire need – especially those on prepayment meters who face the highest tariffs.
“And with further government spending cuts to come, local community charities that support those in need will be stretched to the limit. Any help the scheme can offer with energy will both reduce the demand on local food providers and spare many in our community the traumatic choice between heating and eating. We’re all too aware that personal and business resources are tight but we also know the amazing kindness of our community, so please support this if you can.”
Christina Youngman of Huskky Energy said: “We have drawn on the experience of close family and friends who have experienced energy poverty to understand the adverse impact this can have on mental and physical health. It is unacceptable that households should have to choose between heating and eating.
“The increase in cost of gas and electricity along with the current cost of living crisis can only further affect the affordability of this essential need. Our aim is to bridge the gap in difficult times by making a payment onto their prepayment meters. The Powerbank has so far raised over £1,500, which is fantastic. We rely on public donations and will be working hard to continue our fundraising well into 2023.”
