🤢 Nausea or vomiting
This happened to me BOTH times!

Hormonal changes and the release of prostaglandins can affect your digestive system before labour becomes established.

⚡ A sudden burst of energy
That urge to clean, organise cupboards, batch-cook meals or finish every last baby job may be your body’s version of “it’s nearly time.”

😭 Feeling unusually emotional
Tearful, irritable, restless, overwhelmed or unusually sensitive for no obvious reason. Hormonal shifts can be powerful in the lead-up to labour.

🔥 Persistent lower backache
A dull, period-like ache in your lower back that doesn’t seem to go away can be one of the earliest signs that labour is approaching.

💩 Loose bowels or diarrhoea
Many women notice their bowels emptying before labour starts as the body naturally prepares for birth.

💦 And no… your waters breaking isn’t usually the first sign.

Save this post so you know what to look out for later. 💛

Labour tip nobody talks about?
The toilet. 🚽✨

One of the reasons the toilet can feel strangely helpful in labour is because your body already associates it with releasing and letting go.

Since potty training, you’ve literally conditioned your pelvic floor to relax there. And in birth, a relaxed pelvic floor matters. A LOT.

Tension can make the body resist.
Relaxation helps the pelvic floor lengthen and open as baby moves down. 💫

Midwives and birth educators even nickname it the ‘dilation station’ because many women notice contractions become more productive there.

It’s private.
You feel less observed.
Your jaw softens.
Your body stops trying to ‘perform’.
And often… labour progresses.

Bonus fact: your jaw and pelvic floor are deeply connected, which is why low moaning, relaxed lips and slow breathing can also help the pelvis release. 👏

It’s about creating enough safety for the body to let go so take advantage of this conditioning!

(And yes… your toilet may become your favourite room in labour 😂)

Birth can make people hold their breath without even realising.
And tension in the body often begins with tension in the breath.

One of the simplest tools I teach inside hypnobirthing is visualisation. 🫧

Imagining yourself slowly blowing bubbles during surges can help:
• lengthen the exhale
• soften the jaw and shoulders
• give the mind a focus point
• reduce panic and adrenaline
• help the body stay calm and open

Simple doesn’t mean ineffective.
Sometimes the smallest shifts create the biggest transformation in birth. ✨

Hypnobirthing is so much more than “relaxing”.

It’s the shift from fear and overwhelm… to feeling calm, capable and deeply connected to yourself.

It’s understanding your options so you can make informed decisions with confidence, even in a system that often feels rushed and overstretched. It’s knowing your birth partner can truly support you, advocate for you when needed, and stay grounded beside you through every stage.

But the transformation doesn’t stop at birth.

Because no one really talks about the dynamic shift afterwards — the identity changes, the emotional crazy bits, the adjustment as a couple. Learning how to stay connected as a team through that transition is just as powerful.

That changes everything.

I was an expectant parent once and I was scared. I was anxious and considered myself to have a low pain threshold.

I am a positive and excitable person but I felt the fear of the unknown - MASSIVELY. So when I discovered the existence of hypnobirthing at an NCT course I had to go home and google it, book a course and….. MIND BLOWN 🤯 Everything changed.

Over time, I began to FEEL differently about birth. I was less scared, I felt like I had more control than I thought and was actually raring to go in the end. Yes - excited!

It’s a truly transformational course - find out more by commenting MORE

Hypnobirthing isn’t about controlling birth or putting anyone under hypnosis.
😆
It’s about understanding the mind-body connection so you can feel calmer, safer and more informed during labour.

It can also completely change the way you feel about birth. Many women carry fear, anxiety or even previous trauma with them for years. While no one can control exactly how birth unfolds, hypnobirthing can help stack the odds in your favour for feeling more positive, empowered and supported through the experience.

Hypnobirthing skills aren’t just for the day - they’re for life.

I actively teach my 6 and 8 year old skills from my course and no - not just breathing 😂

Nobody talks about managing family dynamics when your family grows. We do. And it helps. A. LOT.

Everyone needs a WHY and this is mine.
Going from fearful of my low pain threshold to incredibly excited, looking forward to it knowing I was prepared for however my birth unfolded. That’s transformational. How to work with me? Link in comments x
