Choking isn’t rare yet sadly, We don’t talk about it enough and it’s understandable because it’s not a nice thing at all
Last night I had the worst panic attack of my life!
While eating my Evening Meal I started to choke!!!
Except I wasn’t Actually choking 🤔
I could breath but something (Onion) was stuck and I panicked for about an hour I felt awful I was shaking and I realised in that moment just how Horrific it must be for the person who is choking and can’t breath 🥹
Turns out I had not got onion stuck I had burnt my mouth and I had something called Globus pharyngeus
It’s the sensation of having a lump or something stuck in your throat, even if your airway isn’t actually blocked.
Thankfully I am OK it just scared me and made me appreciate even more than I already do how important being Choke Awareness is ♥️
Here are a few things to think about;
📌 It’s one of the leading causes of accidental death in children under five.
📌 Adults over 65 are at higher risk, especially if they have swallowing difficulties. Around 1 in 10 people over 65 have some form of swallowing impairment.
📌 People with neurological conditions like stroke, Parkinson’s, dementia or cerebral palsy are more vulnerable.
📌 People with learning disabilities are several times more likely to choke.
📌 Not every choking incident is loud or obvious. Silent choking happens.
If you run a nursery, school, care home, café, restaurant, pub, hotel, event space, or community centre ANYWHERE that Food is Available this applies to you 💛
Food safety isn’t just about allergens or hygiene ratings. It’s about:
📌 Recognising the signs (it’s not always loud and Obvious, silence is serious)
📌 Knowing how to respond (First Aid Training, LifeVac)
📌 Understanding which foods are high risk (Hard Dry food, Small Round or Slippery food, Sticky Food, Chunks of Meat or Bread, Raw Veg, Cheese)
📌 Being aware of texture, portion (Cut food into small, manageable pieces, Chew slowly and thoroughly. Avoid talking or laughing while eating, Take small sips of water with dry foods)
Being aware isn’t about fear. It’s about being prepared. It’s about protecting the people who trust you.
“We’ve never had an incident” is not a plan.
Making changes to prevent choking is valuable but when Choking does Happen being Prepared is First Aid Training, Awareness about LifeVac and being Prepared Most importantly Prevention, all of it saves lives.
When food is part of your business, so is responsibility.
