Spinal Health Centre South Street

Spinal Health Centre South Street Spinal Health Care. Chiropractic, K Laser and Massage Julien Barker B.Sc. Aged 17 I hit a parked car on my push bike and went through the back windscreen.

(Hons) DC MMCA MCA

Like many graduates of the McTimoney Chiropractic college, my first experience of Chiropractic was as a patient. A bit of a stiff neck became a serious problem several years later, severely affecting my shoulder and sleep. At the age of 19, I was being advised that I would need to take painkillers for the rest of my life. My mum suggested a Chiropractor (Chiro what?). Three ses

sions later and the problem was resolved. To date, it still hasn't returned. Of course there have been a few injuries since then but Chiropractic is always my first choice for treatment and is the key to a speedy recovery. I'm still a maintenance patient myself every 3 months! I graduated with B.Sc Hons degree in Applied Biology from Bath University in 1992. After a few years working in a hard science environment as a microbiologist, I trained as a Chiropractor. After 4 years of training I graduated and began my career in May 2000 at the Rose & Crown clinic in South Molton. After ten good years, I decided it was time to fly solo and set up my own clinic at 11 South Street. Whilst holding true to the principals of McTimoney Chiropractic, I mostly use Activator Chiropractic methods these days. I am one of only forty Advanced Proficiency rated Activator practitioners in the UK and, to date, the only one in Devon. I also integrate Sacral Occipital Technique (SOT) as well as Dry Needling. I am proud to say that the bulk of my referrals come from personal recommendation. Simply put, once the patient's problem is diagnosed, I use a variety of skills to create a bespoke treatment which will fit their individual healthcare needs. When I'm not busy doing this, I live on a smallholding with my wife Claire and our two beautiful daughters. I love surfing, mostly on my longboard at Saunton Sands.

Today is Self Care Day!

Stress is something we all face at various points in our lives. It’s a natural response to pressure - whether it’s related to work, personal matters, or other life demands.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, there are several effective ways to ease the effects of stress and find some calm:

1 – Be Active
Physical activity, whether it's a brisk walk or lifting weights, can be a powerful distraction from stressful thoughts. While exercise may not eliminate the source of your stress, it can help clear your mind and promote relaxation.

2 – Take Control
Being told to “take control” might sound simple, but it’s often key to reducing stress. Feeling powerless is a major contributor to stress. By taking small, proactive steps - like speaking to someone about your situation or tackling manageable tasks - you can start to feel more in charge and less overwhelmed.

3 – Connect
Talking with friends, family, or colleagues can provide emotional support, offer new perspectives, and help reduce feelings of isolation and stress.

4 – Have Some Me Time
Taking time to do the things you enjoy is essential. Long work hours and constant responsibilities often leave little room for self-care, which only adds to stress. Prioritize activities that bring you joy and peace.

5 – Avoid Bad Habits
We all have our go-to habits when under stress, but not all of them are healthy. Substances like alcohol, caffeine, and ni****ne may offer temporary relief but tend to worsen stress over time. Healthier alternatives are more effective for long-term wellbeing.

Julien explains how sitting cross-legged helps keep your hips healthy and how it could even keep you from needing a hip operation in the future. As children, we often sit with our legs crossed, but as we age we often sit in this position less and less. Starting sitting in this position again helps the hips greatly, keeping you flexible.

Muscles, Ligaments, Bones, and Tendons – Do You Know the Difference?

These four components are the unsung heroes of our body’s movement and strength. While they often work together, each plays a unique and vital role:

🦴 Bones form the solid framework of our body, providing structure and protection for our internal organs.
💪 Muscles are responsible for movement—they contract and relax to help us walk, lift, and even smile.
🦵 Tendons connect muscles to bones, acting like strong cables that transmit the force from muscle to bone.
🧵 Ligaments connect bone to bone, helping to stabilize joints and keep everything aligned.

Understanding how these parts work together can help you better care for your body—whether you're recovering from an injury, staying active, or just curious about your amazing anatomy.

Yesterday we had our quarterly Strat Day! We discussed how we can make our memberships even better, then had some food at the Quince Honey Farm followed by archery at Rock And Rapid Adventures.

It was a fantastic day with some really good team building and discussion.
