Consultant Medical Herbalist

Hello. My name is Patricia Ferguson. I graduated as a qualified Medical Herbalist from the University of Westminster with a 2:1 honours degree in 2004. Herbalists are trained in the same diagnostic and clinical examination skills as doctors and study many of the same subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pathology and pharmacology. To qualify to practice, we must complete 500 hours of clinical training and pass a final clinical examination, under the scrutiny of three examiners, including a G.P. At the moment, I am doing some further studies with the North American Institute of Medical Herbalists. I have a special interest in Liver & Colon health and in practice emphasise the importance of cleansing the waste-eliminating organs as the basis for health recovery. In the last few years my interest in raw and living food has grown and as a Raw Food Chef I now incorporate raw food preparation classes into my practice. Living food is rich in nutrients and enzymes and it is this that gives it the ability to heal and rejuvenate the body. Along with my interest and involvement with raw food, I find that I am becoming more aware of green issues and green living. I have had an allotment for the past three years and perhaps this has influenced me, along with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's TV programme, River Cottage, of one day owning a smallholding (without the pigs and chickens!) and becoming more self-reliant.

A talk by Prof. Michael Heinrich about herbal remedies. He is professor of ethnopharmacology and pharmacognosy at UCL. It will take place this coming Thursday, 7 September at the Old Operating Theatre at London Bridge. This is the link:

Are you struggling to lose weight despite your efforts? Well, you may be holding on to fat-soluble toxic matter that just refuses to leave. The fat won't budge because it's needed to contain these nasties and protect your vital organs. So what do you do?

Gelatinous plant foods are good at clearing out the body, think of chia seeds for example. My recipe for Chia Seed Porridge will be in the next post. Flaxseeds and seaweed are also gelatinous foods. These gel fibres move through your intestinal tract absorbing contaminants, binding and carrying them through the intestinal tract. Importantly, they also absorb and bind to the bile salts (which dissolve fat) released by the liver, and these fats also gets passed out.

Without these gelatinous fibres, all the fat soluble nasties that the liver is trying to eliminate by dumping them into the small intestine, tend to be reabsorbed. Gelatinous fibres are excellent at cleaning out the liver and pulling out fat-soluble toxins. Once the toxic matter is gone, the body no longer needs to hold onto the fat to contain them and your excess pounds will melt away.
Hope this helps,

I was involved in a discussion about protein this week. Well, it was more of a disagreement really! I was speaking to someone (who really ought to have known better, to be honest) who insisted that protein only came from meat. I'm sure you guys now by now that this just isn't true. This myth has been busted ages ago.

Nevertheless, I feel compelled to write the definitive truth about protein right here and right now, so here's the science ...

ALL protein is made by plants and it is not necessary for you to eat animal flesh (including eggs) in order to get your protein. It is only plants that have the ability to to take nitrogen from the air, break those molecules apart and then integrate that nitrogen into amino acids to make protein.

Any protein you get from eating meat is just recycled protein. Just look at some of the biggest strongest mammals on Earth, gorillas, rhinos and elephants, e.g. All herbivores! The best sources? Leafy green vegetables (think kale, spinach) and any type of beans.

Hope you find this useful. Please spread the joyous news to friends and enemies alike !

I’m often asked “what is the healthiest water to drink?” The answer: Distilled water! Here’s why:

It is the only water that is pure and free from all impurities. It acts as a solvent in the body by dissolving food substances so that they can be absorbed and transported to every cell in the body. Distilled water dissolves inorganic minerals, acid crystals and all other waste products to be easily eliminated by the process of purification by picking up mineral deposits. These deposits that the body has discarded, have accumulated in joints, artery walls or wherever such deposits occur Distilled water dissolves and carries them out.

Gallstones and kidney stones are reduced in size until they can safely pass through their ducts. Arthritic pains are reduced as joints become more flexible and movable.

Distilled water has the characteristics of a magnet, picking up discarded minerals and, assisted by blood and lymph, transports them to the kidneys for elimination. Note: This is not leaching! The idea that distilled water leaches minerals from the body is false. It does not leach out body minerals, but collects and removes inorganic materials which have already been rejected by bodily cells and tissues and which, if remains can cause severe damage.

Odourless, colourless and tasteless, distilled water contains no solid matter of any kind, no minerals, organic or inorganic. It can be used as drinking water, for cooking, for electric irons and batteries. In fact it is so pure that it is used for:

• intravenous feeding
• kidney dialysis
• prescriptions
• baby formulas

I typically get through about 3.L per week, which I make with my water distiller every Sunday. I bought mine from Water Pure, but do your research and shop around. Enjoy!

And finally, last, but not least in the DISCOUNTED GROCERIES SERIES is No 5. ASDA: "Price cuts at Asda start at 6am and last till 10am, the second reductions begin at around 5pm and the final discounts start at 7.30pm." Kelly also says "I am not a great fan of Asda cuts, as I feel it leaves the best mark-downs to the very last minute and I'd only be using it on the day of sale. However, its reduced bakery products are good". That's it - I hope you will find this information of value and use it to cut your grocery bills. Especially because at this moment in time the pound is falling in value and I can envisage even steeper prices. Best wishes - Patricia x

No. 3 in the DISCOUNTED GROCERIES SERIES is MARKS & SPENCER. Kelly says "this is another one of my favourite shops for high quality food. You can pick up some lovely vegetables in the first wave of reductions between 9am and 10am. The second at around 2pm, is when it starts marking down meat, fish and ready meals. But the real savings can be found after 5.30pm. You can buy fish such as sea bass or lemon sole reduced to around £1.20". I'll post No 4 tomorrow. 😀

Good morning all... Continuing from yesterday's post, about the BEST TIMES OF THE DAY TO GET DISCOUNTED GROCERIES, number 2 is Sainsbury's. Kelly says "I love Sainsbury's. It always has really good quality meat and vegetables at great prices. They start to mark down after around 1pm, but the really big discounts lock in after 7pm, which is perfect for full-time workers. Hope you found that useful. I'll post number 3 tomorrow. 😀

Have you noticed how expensive your weekly shopping has become since the Brexit vote? I estimate that I am spending about 20% more than I was a year ago.
I found this newspaper cutting in my purse, which I’ve had for about two years, but it’s only now that I’ve taken the advice, which has help to cut my weekly shopping bill. I thought you might find it interesting too … It’s entitled: “WHAT TIME OF DAY TO BAG A BARGAIN” written by a woman named Kelly and lists the best time of day to get discounts at the big five supermarkets.

1. The Co-Op
“This is one of my favourite stores for reductions” says Kelly. “I have never had any problems and the food is always of a high standard. It starts really good discounts at 4pm and you can pick up a tray of lamb for around £1.

Whew! It's been hot recently hasn't it? Don't forget to stay hydrated. Try upping your water-rich fruit and veg content. The water in fruit and veg is biologically active, which means that as well as containing lots of water, it's also rich in vitamins and minerals. The top 3 most water-rich fruit are Honeydew melon (94%), Pears and Raspberries (both containing 83% water). Top water-rich veg are Cucumbers (96%) Tomatoes (94%) and Bell Peppers (93%). Have a good week (-:
