How can I trust my gut when my anxiety is telling me that everything is dangerous and frightening?
This is a difficult one because when you are in a highly sensitised state nearly everything can trigger an adrenaline dump & a heap of exaggerated anxious thoughts & it can be hard to see the clear picture through the haze.
Firstly, it gets easier with time, as you move out of the sensitised state you have more periods of clarity & calm & it’s just easier to be sure of your gut feelings vs anxiety/panic.
I will write a blog post on this because I have a lot to say on it, but for now:
⚠️ If you are having a panic attack or feeling particularly anxious consider if you are actually in any danger currently - if you are actually in danger (someone or something is going to hurt you) then you must absolutely trust your gut & leave, immediately. You WILL know if you are in real danger ok, so if there is a threat to you then please do listen to your gut & leave.
❤️🩹 Usually gut feelings are associated with people or situations where we feel that something is just ‘off’. Anxiety can absolutely feel like this too, the difference being that anxiety ebbs and flows where as a gut feeling ultimately will be sticky.. If you have a persistent feeling about someone or something which does not subside in periods of calm then it’s time to trust that gut!
🗣 Talk to a trusted friend or family member, ask them whether they think your feelings are based on something. Trusting your gut can actually be difficult for a non-anxious person too at times & it can really help to talk to someone about how you’re feeling to see if they’ve noticed that something might be ‘off’…
🔒 Contemplate similar situations where you HAVE been right about a gut feeling - compare that to your current feeling and situation, how does it compare?
💭 Therapy is a brilliant way to make sense of thoughts and feelings - just talking out loud can help us to sort through the clutter in our heads and see things with great clarity.
💝 Be kind to yourself. Working with instincts isn’t easy and takes practice, so does the road to disordered anxiety recovery… But you absolutely got this! 💪🏼😊
