Last night we attended an educational Q&A event at Spire, where two Orthopaedic surgeons answered questions on their specialities of the Foot & Ankle and the Hand & Wrist.
Both these parts of the body are complex in nature, with numerous bones, ligaments, tendons and other soft tissue structures that can cause problems. And particularly in winter when there is an increase in the risk of falling.
The most common injury we will see is ankle sprain, an injury that is often underestimated in its impact on mobility. Sufferers can be told in A&E to rest for six weeks, which means they can end up with a weak and stiff ankle, which is then at higher risk of reinjury.
By seeing a Physiotherapist early, diagnosis of the degree of injury will then form the basis of treatment and rehabilitation, which can vary from person to person.
Wrist and hand injuries can impact daily life and function. Strengthening exercises are frequently all that is needed to help these injuries but you need the right ones for your injury. Careful assessment by your physiotherapist could also identify when further imaging may be needed or referral to a specialist.
If you are concerned about a foot or ankle, or hand or wrist problem, simply make an appointment to see one of our Chartered Physiotherapists.
