New data shows deaths caused by cancer are at their lowest level on record....find out more....

Cancer death rates in the UK are at their lowest level on record, according to our new data.

Around 250 in every 100,000 people now die from cancer each year – a 29% decrease since mortality rates peaked in 1989.

Cervical cancer has seen one of the biggest improvements across cancer types, with a 75% reduction in death rates over the past 50 years. Death rates for a number of other cancer types, including stomach and testicular cancers, and Hodgkin's lymphoma, have also dropped considerably.

Dr Sam Godfrey, our science engagement lead, says: “These figures represent decades of crucial scientific breakthroughs – from vaccines that prevent cancer to kinder, more targeted treatments.

“Because of this, thousands more people today can make memories, reach milestones and spend precious time with their loved ones."

Do you know about Martha's rule?

More than 10,000 calls have been made to Martha’s Rule helplines in the first 16 months of the NHS scheme, helping thousands of patients benefit from changes to their care and potentially saving lives.

Martha's Rule helps detect deterioration in hospital patients early. It gives patients and families the right to call for a rapid review if they are worried a loved one’s condition – or their own – is getting worse.

Staff can also ask for a review from a different team if they are concerned any appropriate action is not being taken.

Have you had your shingles vaccine? 💉

National data shows that less than half of eligible adults in the UK are taking up their free shingles vaccine in their first year of eligibility.

Who is eligible?
• People who turned 65 on or after 1 September 2023
• If you turned 65 before 1 September 2023, you'll be eligible for the shingles vaccine when you turn 70 up until your 80th birthday
• Severely immunosuppressed people aged 18+

Shingles can be painful, and for some people, lead to serious complications. Getting vaccinated gives the best protection.

👉 If you or a loved one is eligible, check whether you’ve had your vaccine — and if not, book an appointment here at the practice 🙂

Do you know where to find stoma-friendly toilet facilities when you're out and about?

Do you know where to find stoma-friendly toilet facilities when you're out and about?

We’re really pleased to share that Morrisons has joined our Stoma Friendly Toilets campaign, making all their stores stoma friendly – that’s 500 branches across England, Scotland and Wales!

Accessible toilets in every Morrisons store will include practical features such as a shelf for supplies, hooks for clothing or bags, a bin for discreet disposal, and a mirror for appliance checks.

These might sound like simple additions, but they make a big difference. For the 1 in 335 people in the UK living with a stoma, access to appropriate facilities can mean greater comfort, dignity, and confidence when out and about.

We’re proud to have worked with Morrisons on these improvements and, following B&Q to see another major retailer take this positive step towards making everyday spaces more inclusive.

Morrisons stores will also be added to our online Stoma-Friendly Toilet map, helping even more people plan trips and shopping visits with reassurance.

Thank you to Morrisons for listening, taking action and helping to break down everyday barriers for our community.

This is your reminder to know the symptoms of bowel cancer.

The earlier it’s found, the more treatable it’s likely to be.

Symptoms of bowel cancer include:

- bleeding from your bottom

- blood in your poo

- a change in your pooing habits. You might be going more or less often, or have diarrhoea or constipation that might come and go

- losing weight but you’re not sure why

- feeling very tired all the time but you’re not sure why

- a pain or lump in your tummy

Having these symptoms doesn’t always mean you have bowel cancer but it’s still important to find out what’s causing them. Sometimes these symptoms may come and go or might not feel that serious. It’s still important to talk to your GP.
